Chapter 4 - The Message Hidden in Rex’s Collar
Megan needed help.
She could not call openly.
Ethan controlled the home Wi-Fi and watched the phone account.
Lorraine remained in the guest room.
Martin had disappeared, but his car was still parked nearby.
Megan’s former unit commander, Colonel Daniel Hayes, lived two hours away.
He was one of the few people who would understand a coded message.
Megan wrote four numbers on a strip of medical tape.
Grid coordinates.
Not exact coordinates.
A field pattern indicating compromised communication and imminent danger.
She wrapped the tape beneath Rex’s collar.
Then she recorded a short voice file on a second device.
“Training exercise request. Cold-weather recovery. Old Pine route.”
The phrase meant nothing to civilians.
To Hayes, it identified a contingency path used during K9 search drills.
Megan needed Rex outside long enough to reach the neighbor’s property.
Their neighbor, Tom, kept an unlocked dog-access gate and a security camera.
If Rex appeared alone wearing field tape, Tom would call Hayes.
Megan opened the back door.
Rex looked at her.
“Route,” she whispered.
The dog ran into the snow.
Ten minutes later, Ethan noticed.
“Where’s Rex?”
“Bathroom.”
“In a blizzard?”
“He’ll come back.”
Ethan walked to the window.
Megan kept her breathing even.
Rex returned fifteen minutes later.
Snow covered his back.
The tape was gone.
The message had been delivered.
Ethan stared at the dog.
“You’re too attached to that animal.”
“He saved my life twice.”
“He’s retired.”
“So am I.”
Ethan turned.
Something in his eyes changed.
“Not officially.”
Megan understood.
The accidental death policy paid differently depending on whether she died as an active-duty casualty, a service-related complication, or a civilian accident.
They needed her death classified a certain way.
Lorraine entered carrying coffee.
“We leave at ten.”
Megan looked outside.
Snow already buried the road edges.
“The storm warning says travel is dangerous.”
Lorraine smiled.
“That is why no one else will be near the cabin.”
The honesty lasted only a second.
Then she added, “Peace and quiet.”
Megan looked at Rex.
His ears shifted once.
Hayes had received the message.
