Chapter 14 - The Soldier Ethan Could Not Break
The courtroom was full.
Military representatives sat behind Megan.
Hayes sat near the aisle.
Rex was not allowed beside her during testimony, but he waited with a handler outside.
Ethan avoided looking at Megan.
Lorraine did not.
She watched with the same cold expression she wore in the forest.
Prosecutors presented the body-camera footage first.
Ethan pulling the strap.
Megan gasping.
Lorraine holding the duffel.
The staged dog tags.
The flask.
The shovel.
Then Ethan’s voice:
Freeze or die.
The courtroom became silent.
The video showed Rex loosening the knot.
It showed Lorraine advancing.
It showed Megan stopping the shovel.
It showed the pistol falling into the snow.
There was no confusion.
No accident.
No misunderstanding.
Then the financial evidence appeared.
Forged signatures.
Stolen retirement funds.
Insurance policies.
Cabin transfers.
Payments to Reeves.
Messages with Allison.
The planned date of death.
Ethan’s attorney argued that Lorraine manipulated him.
Lorraine’s attorney argued that Ethan acted independently.
Megan listened without expression.
When she took the stand, Ethan finally looked at her.
The prosecutor asked what she remembered most.
“Not the pain,” Megan said.
“What, then?”
“The confidence.”
She looked directly at Ethan.
“He smiled because he believed my injuries had made me helpless.”
Ethan lowered his eyes.
Megan continued.
“He did not understand that being wounded and being weak are not the same thing.”
The prosecutor asked about Rex.
Megan’s voice softened.
“He followed orders even when instinct told him to attack. That discipline saved all of us.”
“Even the defendants?”
“Yes.”
The answer unsettled the courtroom.
Rex could have severely injured Ethan or Lorraine.
Megan’s commands prevented it.
The people trying to kill her survived because she maintained control.
At sentencing, the judge described the conspiracy as deliberate, financially motivated, and exceptionally cruel.
Ethan, Lorraine, Reeves, Martin, and Allison each received consequences based on their roles.
Megan did not celebrate.
Justice did not restore her marriage.
It did not erase the tree.
But it removed their power to rewrite what happened.
Outside the courthouse, Rex ran toward her.
Megan lowered herself carefully.
He pressed his forehead against hers.
“You stayed,” she whispered.
