Chapter 2 - The Sergeant Who Came Home Too Early

Three days earlier, Megan had arrived at the Cole family home without warning.
She was supposed to remain at a military rehabilitation center for another month.
Instead, a medical review cleared her for limited recovery at home.
Megan wanted to surprise Ethan.
She had survived an explosion during her final overseas deployment.
Two soldiers were injured beside her.
Megan dragged both men behind cover before a second blast struck.
The rescue earned her another commendation.
It also left her with cracked ribs, nerve damage in one leg, and a shoulder that still slipped under pressure.
Ethan told everyone he was proud.
On video calls, he cried.
He promised their marriage would begin again when she came home.
Megan believed him.
She arrived in Colorado after dark with one duffel bag and Rex beside her.
Rex had served with her during an earlier deployment.
He retired after a leg injury and had lived with Megan and Ethan for nearly four years.
The dog recognized the house before the car stopped.
He did not rush toward the front door.
Instead, he stood rigid beside Megan and growled at the garage.
That was unusual.
Megan entered quietly.
The kitchen lights were on.
Voices came from Ethan’s office.
Lorraine was inside.
So was a man Megan did not recognize.
Papers covered the desk.
Ethan said, “Once the death benefit clears, the cabin disappears into the trust.”
Lorraine answered, “Only if she is declared dead outside military service.”
The stranger tapped a document.
“Exposure looks accidental if the timeline is clean.”
Megan froze in the hallway.
Rex pressed against her injured leg.
Ethan continued.
“She can barely walk. She won’t survive an hour in that storm.”
Megan’s pulse slowed.
The pain in her body disappeared beneath something colder.
They were talking about her.
Not theoretically.
They had already chosen the weather.
The place.
The legal explanation.
Megan quietly removed her phone and activated the recorder.
Then Rex’s identification tag struck the wall.
The small metallic sound stopped the conversation.
Ethan opened the office door.
For one second, husband and wife stared at each other.
His shock turned into a smile.
“Megan,” he said. “You’re home early.”
Lorraine immediately closed the folder.
The stranger stood.
Ethan approached as though nothing had happened.
Then Megan saw her own name printed across the top page.
Below it were the words:

SURVIVOR BENEFICIARY AMENDMENT.
👉 Megan had overheard enough to know they wanted her dead—but the document on Ethan’s desk revealed they had been stealing from her long before the storm.
