Chapter 1

PART 1:

Audrey sat upright in the hospital bed, trembling from pain she was too exhausted to hide.

The room was white.

Too white.

White walls.

White sheets.

White lights humming above her like they had no mercy.

In her arms were two premature babies wrapped in soft blue blankets, both so tiny they looked like they belonged inside a prayer instead of the world.

One slept against her chest.

The other made a small, fragile sound whenever Audrey shifted.

Then Dominic walked in.

Not quietly.

Not worried.

Not like a husband whose wife had almost died bringing his children into the world.

He came in wearing a dark coat, his jaw tight, his eyes cold.

Natalie stood behind him in a red dress, one hand resting on her stomach.

Audrey saw the dress first.

Then the smile.

Then the maternity coat over Natalie’s shoulders.

Audrey’s breath caught.

That coat.

Dominic stepped to the side of the bed and threw a stack of papers into Audrey’s lap.

The corner of the packet hit one of the blue blankets.

One baby startled and began to cry.

Audrey immediately curled forward, shielding both infants with her body.

Dominic leaned down close.

“Sign it,” he said. “You and those runts are on your own.”

Audrey’s eyes filled with tears.

But she did not look down.

She looked straight at him.

“Don’t call them that.”

Dominic laughed softly, like her pain bored him.

Then he lifted a white envelope and waved it in front of her face.

“You have no money,” he said. “No family. No choice.”

Natalie smiled behind him.

Audrey looked at the divorce papers.

Then at the two babies in her arms.

Her whole body was shaking.

But something in her face went still.

She stopped arguing.

Her eyes moved to Natalie’s coat.

Cream wool.

Gold buttons.

A soft collar.

Expensive, but not store-bought.

Audrey knew every stitch.

She had chosen the fabric herself months ago, back when she still believed Dominic loved the family they were building.

Near the inside pocket, two tiny letters had been embroidered in pale blue thread.

Letters meant for the twins.

Audrey looked at Natalie wearing it like a trophy.

Then she looked at the phone on the bedside table.

“That coat was made for my children,” Audrey said calmly.

Natalie’s smile faltered.

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

Audrey reached for the phone.

Before she could unlock it, the hospital room door opened hard.

A silver-haired old man in a tailored suit stepped inside with two hospital security officers and a lawyer behind him.

Dominic turned.

His face changed instantly.

The old man did not look at Dominic first.

He looked at Audrey.

Then at the babies.

His expression softened for one heartbeat.

Then it turned to ice.

“Who threatened my great-grandchildren?”

Dominic went completely still.

Natalie’s hand slipped from her stomach.

Audrey held the twins tighter and looked at her husband with tired, wet eyes.

“I told you I wasn’t alone.”

May you like

Nobody spoke after that.

👉 But for nine months, Dominic had believed Audrey was the kind of woman he could erase without consequences.
