Chapter 10

PART 10:
Outside, afternoon light poured through the hospital windows.
Audrey’s daughters reached for each other from separate arms, tiny fingers stretching until they touched.
Audrey watched them and felt something inside her finally settle.
Dominic had thrown papers at her and called her children worthless because he thought she was alone.
But he had never understood the kind of woman he was trying to discard.
Audrey was not the poor orphan he could silence.
She was a mother.
A daughter.
A granddaughter.
And the first safe home her children would ever know.
For so long, Dominic had used loneliness like a weapon.
He thought no parents meant no protection.
He thought no siblings meant no witnesses.
He thought no big last name meant no power.
He thought Audrey’s quietness meant surrender.
But Audrey’s quietness had never been weakness.
It was survival.
It was patience.
It was the silence of a woman gathering the strength to choose herself and her children.
The stolen coat was back.
The babies were safe.
The hospital room that once held humiliation now held proof that she had survived it.
And the family Dominic said she did not have had walked through the door exactly when she needed them most.
Audrey looked at her daughters in their matching blue coats.
Tiny.
Strong.
Loved.
Then she looked at her grandfather.
For the first time in her life, she did not feel like someone waiting to be chosen.
She had chosen.
She had chosen safety.
She had chosen truth.
She had chosen her children.
May you like
And that was the choice Dominic never thought she had.
If you were Audrey, would you ever allow Dominic back into the twins’ lives after what he did in that hospital room?
