Chapter 9

PART 9:

Months later, Dominic appeared in family court wearing the same expensive watch he had worn at the hospital.

But he looked different.

Smaller.

Not poor.

Not ruined.

Just exposed.

The judge reviewed his compliance.

Incomplete classes.

Missed supervised visits.

Late payments.

Aggressive messages sent through third parties.

The court reduced his access further until he complied fully.

Dominic turned to Audrey outside the courtroom.

“You poisoned everyone against me.”

Audrey looked at him calmly.

“No. You spoke. People finally listened.”

He had no answer.

He never did when the truth was simple.

Audrey walked out with her grandfather beside her and the twins waiting safely at home.

A year after the hospital room, Audrey returned to the same maternity ward.

This time, not as a terrified mother with divorce papers in her lap.

She came with two healthy little girls in matching blue coats.

The nurses who had cared for them gathered around, smiling and wiping tears.

One of the babies grabbed at Audrey’s necklace.

The other squealed at the old man’s silver hair.

Audrey laughed.

Really laughed.

A nurse looked at the twins and said, “They’re beautiful.”

Audrey kissed one soft forehead.

“They were always beautiful.”

In the hallway, she paused near the door of the room where Dominic had tried to break her.

For one second, she could almost hear his voice again.

You have no money. No family. No choice.

Then her grandfather stepped beside her, holding one baby.

“You okay?” he asked.

Audrey looked at her daughters.

At the blue coats.

At the man who had found her after a lifetime of being lost.

Then she smiled.

“Yes,” she said. “I have choices now.”

He corrected her gently.

May you like

“You always did. He just lied.”

👉 And in that moment, Audrey finally understood she had never been the helpless woman Dominic wanted her to be.
