Chapter 7

PART 7:

The next several weeks were not easy.

Premature babies do not turn a story into a clean happy ending overnight.

The twins stayed in the NICU.

Audrey recovered slowly.

Her body hurt.

Her heart hurt more.

Some nights she sat beside the incubators and whispered apologies to babies who had done nothing but arrive early into chaos.

Her grandfather came every day.

Sometimes in a suit.

Sometimes in a cardigan.

Always with coffee for the nurses and fresh socks for Audrey because he noticed hospitals were cold.

He never asked her to forgive him for not finding her sooner.

That made it easier to someday consider it.

Dominic tried to fight.

Of course he did.

Men like him rarely leave quietly when control is taken from them.

His attorney claimed he had been overwhelmed.

He claimed the word runts was “taken out of context.”

He claimed Natalie had borrowed the coat by mistake.

Then the hospital footage came out.

The papers thrown into Audrey’s lap.

The baby crying.

Dominic leaning over her.

You have no money. No family. No choice.

The judge watched the clip without expression.

Then she looked at Dominic.

“Mr. Vale, I strongly suggest you reconsider your understanding of choice.”

Audrey was granted temporary sole custody while the case moved forward.

Dominic received supervised visitation only after completing evaluations and parenting requirements.

Natalie disappeared from his side within a month, especially after learning Audrey’s grandfather’s legal team was pursuing the stolen property and financial transfers Dominic had hidden.

Dominic lost more than a mistress.

He lost the story he had told himself.

That he was generous.

That Audrey was helpless.

That the babies were burdens.

That nobody would stand beside the orphan girl.

In the divorce, Audrey did not ask for revenge.

She asked for safety.

Medical support for the twins.

A fair division of assets.

Full documentation of Dominic’s financial deception.

And a protective order that kept him from entering her hospital room, her recovery apartment, or the NICU without permission.

Her grandfather offered to bury Dominic in court.

Audrey shook her head.

“I don’t need him destroyed,” she said. “I need him unable to destroy us.”

The old man looked at her for a long time.

Then he nodded.

“That sounds like Caroline.”

Audrey’s throat tightened.

Her mother’s name still felt new.

Painful.

May you like

Precious.

👉 And when Audrey asked about the mother she never knew, her grandfather gave her a truth she would carry into motherhood.
