Chapter 6
PART 6:
The nurse handed the coat to the old man.
He folded it carefully, his hands trembling with anger.
Then he laid it across the foot of Audrey’s bed.
“For them,” he said softly.
Audrey’s tears finally spilled.
Dominic saw the shift in the room.
He tried to regain control.
“You can’t just come in here and threaten me. I’m her husband.”
The lawyer looked at him.
“Not for long, if the documents you brought are what you claim.”
Dominic glanced at the divorce papers.
His confidence returned slightly.
“She’ll sign.”
Audrey almost laughed.
It came out like a broken breath.
“You really thought I would sign that with my babies in my arms?”
“You have no choice.”
The old man turned to him.
“She has every choice.”
Dominic’s face twisted.
“You don’t even know her.”
The old man looked at Audrey.
His voice softened.
“I know who she comes from.”
Then he turned back to Dominic.
“And I know what kind of man attacks a woman when he believes she is alone.”
The hospital security officer stepped forward.
“Sir, you need to leave the room.”
Dominic’s eyes widened.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“This is my wife.”
The officer looked at Audrey.
“Ma’am, do you want him here?”
Audrey’s lips trembled.
Then she said it clearly.
“No.”
That one word changed everything.
Dominic stared as if she had struck him.
The officer moved between them.
“Step out.”
Natalie reached for Dominic’s arm.
“Dom, let’s go.”
But Dominic was not done.
He leaned around the officer and pointed at Audrey.
“You think this old man is going to save you? You’re still nothing without me.”
The old man’s face became terrifyingly calm.
“Mr. Vale, my granddaughter survived foster care, pregnancy complications, your betrayal, and premature labor. The only thing making her life smaller was you.”
Dominic opened his mouth.
The lawyer cut in.
“And for the record, the hospital cameras in this room and hallway captured your threats.”
Dominic froze.
Audrey looked at the small camera above the corner of the room.
She had not noticed it before.
Natalie had.
Her face went pale.
The lawyer continued.
“We will be filing for emergency protective orders, custody protections, and a review of financial misconduct. We are also requesting that the stolen property be documented.”
Natalie whispered, “Stolen?”
Audrey looked at the coat.
“Yes,” she said.
Her voice was still weak.
But this time, it carried.
“You stood in my hospital room wearing something made for the children you laughed at.”
Natalie’s mouth opened, but no excuse came out.
Security escorted them into the hallway.
Dominic tried to look angry.
Natalie looked scared.
Rebecca, Dominic’s mother, arrived twenty minutes later demanding access.
She was not allowed in.
For the first time in their marriage, the world did not bend around Dominic’s family.
