Chapter 1 - The Flame Near Her Face

“That money was for Beth’s wedding.”
Linda Simpson’s voice was frighteningly calm as she pulled Joanna’s head sideways by the hair.
The small yellow lighter clicked open.
A flame appeared inches from Joanna’s cheek.
Joanna sat rigidly on the wooden kitchen stool, both arms locked around the dark blue property folder pressed against her chest. Her auburn-brown hair stretched painfully between Linda’s fist and her scalp.
Across the marble island, Beth stood with her arms folded.
She was smiling.
Robert remained several feet behind them, staring at the dark hardwood floor as if refusing to see his own daughter being threatened.
Joanna’s breath caught.
The kitchen looked almost painfully ordinary.
Bright white cabinets.
Silver pendant lights.
Clean afternoon sunlight pouring through wide windows.
A family photograph hanging near the refrigerator.
Only the flame made the room feel unreal.
“I earned every dollar,” Joanna said.
Linda tightened her grip and pulled once, hard.
Joanna’s shoulder struck the stool’s backrest.
“You belong to this family.”
Beth’s smile widened.
Robert took half a step forward.
Then he stopped.
Joanna looked directly at him.
For one second, their eyes met.
Her father looked down.
That hurt more than Linda’s fist.
Beneath the property folder, Joanna moved her thumb.
Her black smartphone was hidden against her stomach.
She pressed the side button.
The recording began.
Beth noticed the glow beneath the folder.
Her smile disappeared.
“Mom,” she said quickly. “She’s recording.”
Linda’s eyes sharpened.
The lighter moved closer.
Joanna released one arm from the folder, caught Linda’s wrist with both hands, and pushed it outward with all the strength she had.
The flame swung safely toward the marble island.
Linda’s body twisted.
Her fingers loosened.
Joanna tore her hair free and stood.
“Let go of me. Now.”
She shoved the stool between them and raised the property folder like a shield as Beth stepped toward the phone.
Robert finally spoke.
“Linda… what did you report?”
The room went silent.
Linda snapped the lighter closed.
Her smartphone vibrated on the counter.
Joanna turned it over with two fingers.
An official police emblem filled the screen.
Beneath it was one word.
MONTEREY.
Then a distant siren rose outside.
Three heavy knocks struck the front door.
Linda’s confidence returned for one cruel second.
“They’re not here for me,” she said.
Joanna looked down at the gold house symbol embossed on her folder.
Her new home was in Monterey.

And no one in this kitchen was supposed to know its address.
👉 Joanna had spent six years hiding her escape plan—but Linda had already sent the police to the one place meant to save her.
