Chapter 11 - The Plan After Joanna’s Arrest

The digital folder contained seven documents.

The first was the forged transfer authorization.

The second was a draft statement accusing Joanna of stealing Evelyn’s jewelry.

The third was a timeline describing Joanna as unstable, secretive, and financially irresponsible.

The fourth was a petition Linda planned to file requesting temporary control over Joanna’s assets.

The fifth listed the Monterey house as property purchased with stolen funds.

The sixth contained photographs of Joanna crying at Evelyn’s funeral.

Linda had captioned them as proof of “emotional instability.”

The seventh document was an email draft addressed to Joanna’s employer.

It accused Joanna of elder abuse, theft, and fraud.

Joanna read the words in silence.

Linda intended to destroy her career.

Her reputation.

Her ability to defend herself.

Then, while Joanna faced criminal charges, Linda would petition for control of the house and sell it.

Beth would receive her wedding.

Linda would escape the cancellation debt.

Robert would remain quiet.

And Joanna would be labeled unstable if she fought back.

Detective Chen asked Linda whether she created the folder.

Linda’s voice was flat.

“I was collecting information.”

“For what purpose?”

“To protect the family.”

Joanna looked at her.

“You planned to have me arrested.”

“You planned to abandon us.”

“So you decided to erase my life?”

“I decided to stop you from stealing what was ours.”

“It was never yours.”

Linda’s hand slammed against the island.

“You exist because of me!”

The outburst echoed through the kitchen.

No one spoke.

Joanna finally understood the belief beneath every demand.

Linda did not see her daughters as separate adults.

Beth was an extension who reflected her status.

Joanna was a resource who financed it.

Love was obedience.

Independence was betrayal.

Robert sank into a chair.

“How long were you planning this?”

Linda looked at him with disgust.

“Since I learned about the house.”

Robert’s mouth opened.

“You told me you only wanted to talk to her.”

“And you believed me because believing me is easier than having a spine.”

The words shattered something in him.

Robert stood.

For the first time, he faced Linda without looking away.

“You used me.”

Linda laughed.

“You volunteered.”

He flinched because it was partly true.

Then Detective Chen found another file.

A scanned notarized declaration claiming Robert witnessed Joanna admit stealing Evelyn’s jewelry.

Robert stared at the signature.

“That isn’t mine.”

Linda had forged him too.

👉 Robert had spent decades protecting Linda from consequences—but she had already prepared to make him the witness who carried the blame.
