Chapter 14 - Linda’s Last Performance
At the preliminary hearing, Linda arrived wearing a modest gray dress and no makeup.
She walked slowly.
She held Robert’s old family Bible against her chest.
To strangers, she looked like a devastated mother.
Her attorney described Joanna as a wealthy daughter who abandoned her family, manipulated her grandmother, and provoked an argument over money.
Linda claimed the lighter had been used only to light a candle.
She claimed Joanna grabbed her first.
She claimed the legal documents were drafts for a voluntary family loan.
She claimed Robert’s statement resulted from years of emotional intimidation by Joanna.
Then Joanna’s attorney played the kitchen recording.
Linda’s voice filled the courtroom.
That money was for Beth’s wedding.
You belong to this family.
The video from Joanna’s phone showed Linda’s fist twisted in Joanna’s hair.
The lighter flame was visible.
Beth’s fading smile was visible.
Robert’s refusal to intervene was visible.
Then the financial-crimes detective presented the forged signature files.
The shipping receipt.
The false Monterey report.
The jewelry recording.
The judge’s expression hardened.
Linda attempted one final appeal.
“I was trying to keep my family together.”
Joanna stood when permitted to address the court.
“For years, my mother called control love.”
Her voice trembled once.
Then steadied.
“She told me every paycheck belonged to the family. Every boundary was selfish. Every private choice was betrayal.”
Linda stared at her.
Joanna continued.
“When I bought a home, she did not see a daughter building a future. She saw property escaping her control.”
The courtroom became silent.
“She tried to take my home, destroy my career, and make the police believe I had stolen from the grandmother who protected me.”
Joanna looked toward Beth and Robert.
“They helped her because silence was easier than resistance.”
Robert lowered his head.
Beth cried quietly.
“But silence ended in that kitchen.”
Linda was convicted of felony attempted fraud, forgery, filing a false report, evidence tampering, coercion, and assault.
She received a prison sentence, restitution obligations, and a permanent protective order prohibiting contact with Joanna.
Robert pleaded guilty to unauthorized computer access and received probation after cooperating fully.
Beth was not criminally charged for the wedding scheme, but she was required to surrender the event-company records and testify.
The resort contract was canceled.
There was no luxury wedding.
No family spectacle.
