Chapter 12 - Robert Finally Chose a Side
Robert picked up the declaration with shaking hands.
Linda had signed his name beneath a false statement.
If Joanna had been charged, the document could have made Robert an accomplice to perjury.
“You were going to say I wrote this?”
Linda did not answer.
“You were going to let me lie to the police?”
“I was handling the situation.”
“You were setting me up.”
Linda leaned back.
“Now you know how Joanna feels,” Beth said.
The words surprised everyone.
Beth had spent years enjoying the protection Linda gave her.
She had accepted money without asking where it came from.
She had mocked Joanna for being cautious.
But seeing her own mother’s plan written in a folder changed something.
Beth removed her engagement ring.
“My wedding is canceled.”
Linda stared at her.
“You will not humiliate me.”
“This stopped being my wedding a long time ago.”
“You begged for that resort.”
“I wanted one day. You turned it into a crime.”
Beth placed the ring on the island.
Her fiancé had insisted they wait and save.
Linda convinced Beth that a large wedding would force him to “rise to the family standard.”
Now Beth saw the manipulation.
She looked at Joanna.
“I’m sorry.”
Joanna did not accept the apology immediately.
Beth had smiled while Linda held a flame near her face.
Some betrayals required more than tears.
“You knew she wanted my money.”
“Yes.”
“You watched her hurt me.”
Beth’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“Then you have a lot more to answer for than a canceled wedding.”
Beth nodded.
“I know.”
Robert walked toward Joanna.
“I will give a full statement.”
Linda scoffed.
“You think she’ll forgive you?”
Robert looked at his daughter.
“No. I don’t deserve that.”
For once, he did not ask Joanna to make his guilt easier.
He simply told the truth.
He admitted accessing the bank account.
He admitted shipping the box.
He admitted remaining silent during years of financial pressure.
He admitted Linda had frightened him.
And he admitted that fear did not excuse helping her.
Detective Chen recorded every word.
Linda watched the family she controlled begin speaking without her permission.
Her composure finally cracked.
“You would all have nothing without me.”
Joanna picked up the blue property folder.
“No. We had nothing because everything had to belong to you.”
Linda moved toward her.
The officers stepped between them.
