Chapter 7 - The Box in Monterey

Joanna’s thoughts raced toward the Monterey house.

She had spent only one night there.

Most rooms were still empty.

The previous owner had left shelves, old garden tools, and several sealed storage boxes in the garage.

Joanna planned to sort them after moving.

One box had arrived separately from Phoenix.

Robert had offered to ship it.

He said it contained Joanna’s childhood photographs and Evelyn’s books.

Joanna had never opened it.

She looked at her father.

“What did you put in the box you shipped?”

Robert blinked.

“Photographs.”

“What else?”

“Nothing.”

Linda answered too quickly.

“Why does that matter?”

Joanna’s fear became certainty.

The police report.

The Monterey address.

A box placed inside the property by someone in this kitchen.

This was not merely a false accusation.

It was a setup.

Joanna stepped toward Robert.

“Dad, look at me.”

He could not.

“What is in that box?”

“I don’t know.”

“But you shipped it.”

“Linda packed it.”

Beth looked between them.

“Mom?”

Linda’s confidence hardened.

“Stop letting her control the conversation.”

“What did you put in my house?” Joanna demanded.

Linda moved toward the phone.

Joanna raised the folder.

“Stay back.”

The knocking came again.

“Phoenix Police,” a voice called through the door. “Open the door, please.”

Linda smiled.

She believed help had arrived for her.

Joanna did not open the door immediately.

She turned toward Robert.

“If officers in Monterey find anything illegal in that box, you will be part of this.”

Robert looked terrified.

“I didn’t know.”

“Know what?”

Linda shouted, “Don’t answer her!”

That was the moment Robert finally understood Linda would sacrifice him too.

He gripped the back of a chair.

“She put Grandma’s jewelry inside.”

Joanna went still.

Beth’s mouth opened.

“What jewelry?”

“The pieces Linda said Joanna stole after the funeral.”

Joanna stared at him.

Evelyn’s diamond bracelet and antique gold necklace had disappeared two weeks after her death.

Linda accused the home-care nurse.

The nurse lost her job.

No one ever proved anything.

“Where did Mom get them?”

Robert whispered, “She had them.”

Linda stepped toward him.

“You coward.”

Robert flinched.

Joanna’s breathing turned shallow.

Linda had placed stolen jewelry inside Joanna’s new home.

Then reported Joanna for exploiting Evelyn.

If the police found the jewelry, the lie would appear true.

Joanna raised her phone higher.

“Say it again, Dad.”

Robert looked at the recording screen.

“Linda packed Evelyn’s missing jewelry into the box we sent to Monterey.”

Linda lunged toward him.

The front door handle turned.

👉 Joanna finally had proof of the setup—but Linda was about to claim the recording itself had been obtained through violence.
