Chapter 12 - Behind the Purple Heart
The medal shadow box remained on the evidence table.
It had been delivered from a military storage facility where Thomas sent it before his death.
Elaine had never possessed it.
The judge permitted a court officer to inspect the frame.
The velvet backing appeared solid.
Then Rebecca noticed one corner sat slightly higher than the others.
Thomas had built the box himself.
Of course he had hidden something inside it.
The officer removed the rear panel.
Behind Rebecca’s Purple Heart was a thin blue notebook wrapped in plastic.
Curtis whispered a curse.
Elaine closed her eyes.
The notebook contained dates, transfers, account numbers, and handwritten observations.
Thomas had documented Curtis’s unauthorized withdrawals.
He recorded Elaine’s threats against Leonard Hayes.
He listed medication changes he did not approve.
He wrote that Elaine repeatedly pressured him to disinherit Rebecca.
One entry stood out.
Elaine says Rebecca is dead. I do not believe her. She wants me to sign before Rebecca comes home.
Another:
Curtis brought a new will. I refused. Signature page disappeared from my desk.
The final page was dated four days before Thomas died.
Medication tastes different. Elaine says doctor changed it. Doctor says he did not.
The courtroom went silent.
Rebecca looked toward her mother.
“What did you give him?”
Elaine’s face became rigid.
“Nothing.”
Curtis turned toward her.
“You said his doctor changed the prescription.”
“Be quiet.”
Rebecca’s attorney requested immediate preservation of Thomas’s medical and pharmacy records.
The judge granted it.
This was no longer only a dispute over inheritance.
Thomas may have been medically manipulated during the period when the forged will appeared.
Elaine’s attorney demanded a recess.
The judge refused.
Then Leonard Hayes entered the courtroom under subpoena protection.
He carried his original office calendar.
One entry showed Elaine meeting him alone the day before the will was supposedly signed.
Beside the appointment, Hayes had written two words:
May you like
She threatened me.
