Chapter 13 - The Medication That Changed
Thomas had a heart condition.
For twelve years, he took the same medication.
His physician adjusted the dosage carefully.
Two weeks before his death, the pharmacy received a new prescription increasing it dramatically.
The order appeared to come from Thomas’s doctor.
It did not.
The doctor denied issuing it.
The electronic signature was copied from an older prescription.
The medication bottle recovered from the Wright home carried the altered dosage.
Elaine claimed Thomas managed his own pills.
The home nurse told a different story.
Elaine had dismissed her ten days before Thomas died.
“She said Mr. Wright no longer needed help,” the nurse testified.
“Was that true?”
“No. He was weaker and increasingly confused.”
“Did you observe Mrs. Wright handling his medication?”
“Yes.”
Curtis stared at the table.
He had known Elaine controlled the pills.
He claimed he did not know the dosage was wrong.
Thomas’s final blood sample had been preserved because his death occurred shortly after a medication change.
The toxicology result showed a dangerous concentration of the heart drug.
Not enough to prove intentional poisoning by itself.
Enough to prove the prescription had placed him at serious risk.
Rebecca felt the courtroom tilt beneath her.
Her father had asked for help.
He had documented his fear.
Then he died while Elaine controlled his medicine.
Rebecca wanted to scream.
Instead, she pressed both palms against the witness rail and breathed the way she had been trained.

Hold.
Out.
Elaine watched her.
“You always wanted me to be a monster,” she said.
Rebecca turned slowly.
“No. I wanted you to be my mother.”
For the first time, Elaine’s expression cracked.
Then she recovered.
“Thomas was dying. I was taking care of him while you played soldier.”
Carney rose from his seat.
Rebecca lifted one scarred hand, stopping him.
She did not need anyone to speak for her.
“I was serving,” Rebecca said. “Dad knew it. You knew it too.”
Elaine looked away.
