Chapter 8 - The Medal Shadow Box
Rebecca’s medal shadow box arrived at the courthouse under seal.
The Silver Star sat above the Purple Heart.
Service ribbons lined the dark velvet backing.
A small brass plate displayed her name and rank.
Elaine’s attorney treated the box like a cheap stage prop.
“Who assembled this?”
“A military awards office.”
“Can you prove that?”
“Yes.”
“Where is the shipping record?”
“The package was delivered through a secure facility.”
“So there is no standard receipt?”
“No.”
The attorney walked closer.
“Captain Smith, medals like these can be purchased online, correct?”
“Replicas can.”
“And uniforms?”
“Yes.”
“Badges?”
“Yes.”
“Nameplates?”
“Yes.”
He turned toward the spectators.
“Everything we see here can be purchased.”
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“What cannot be purchased is the record behind them.”
“But your record is sealed.”
“Parts of it.”
“Convenient.”
The word triggered murmurs.
The judge warned the gallery.
Elaine watched Rebecca with the expression of a grieving mother.
“I wish she would stop,” she told a reporter during recess. “I love my daughter, but she needs help.”
The statement spread quickly.
Rebecca received messages from people accusing her of insulting real veterans.
One veteran’s organization asked her to withdraw the medals from evidence until they could be verified.
Rebecca refused.
Her attorney worried the court was losing patience.
“The military authorization must arrive soon.”
Rebecca checked the courtroom clock.
11:12.
Commander Duane Carney had promised to appear by noon if clearance was granted.
He was one of the few people legally authorized to verify her service.
But authorization had not been confirmed.
At 11:30, no message came.
At 11:40, Elaine took the stand.
At 11:47, she swore Rebecca had never served.
Then Rebecca exposed her scars.
The courtroom doors opened seconds later.
Carney entered carrying the sealed folder.
He saluted Rebecca.
