Chapter 14 - Curtis Turns on His Mother
Curtis requested a private conference with his attorney.
When court resumed, he no longer sat beside Elaine.
He moved to a separate table.
Elaine stared at him.
“What are you doing?”
Curtis avoided her eyes.
His attorney announced that Curtis wished to correct prior testimony.
Elaine’s face went white.
Curtis admitted paying Leonard Hayes.
He admitted moving company funds.
He admitted helping Elaine create the revised estate documents.
But he denied knowing the medication had been altered.
“It was supposed to be about the company,” Curtis said.
Rebecca watched him carefully.
“You helped erase me from Dad’s will.”
Curtis swallowed.
“Mom said you were never coming back.”
“You knew I was in the Army.”
“I knew you enlisted.”
“You saw my commissioning photograph.”
“She said you washed out.”
Rebecca’s voice sharpened.
“And you believed her?”
Curtis finally looked at her.
“I believed what helped me.”
The honesty stunned the room.
Curtis explained that Elaine promised to save him from prosecution if he supported the forged will.
Thomas had discovered the missing funds.
Curtis feared prison.
Elaine told him that once Thomas died, the company records could be rewritten.
“When did she say ‘once Thomas died’?” Rebecca’s attorney asked.
Curtis hesitated.
“Before he died.”
Elaine stood.
“He is lying to protect himself.”
Curtis turned toward her.
“You told me the higher dose would keep Dad calm.”
The courtroom went completely silent.
Elaine’s attorney grabbed her arm and ordered her not to speak.
Curtis continued.
“You said the doctor approved it.”
“I did not alter any medication.”
“You had the prescription in your purse.”
Elaine’s composure vanished.
“You ungrateful coward!”
The judge struck the gavel.
Curtis flinched.
Elaine pointed at him.
“I protected you from your own stupidity.”
“And now you’re going to blame me for everything.”
Rebecca watched the family alliance collapse in real time.
