Chapter 2 - The Daughter Who Disappeared
Rebecca had not spoken to her mother in nearly six years.
To the Wright family, she had simply vanished.
Elaine told neighbors that her oldest daughter had become unstable after college.
She told relatives that Rebecca joined “some private security group” and began inventing heroic stories.
She told Curtis that Rebecca abandoned the family because she was jealous of him.
None of it was true.
Rebecca had enlisted quietly at twenty-two.
Her father, Thomas Wright, was the only family member who supported her.
Thomas had served as an Army medic in his youth.
When Rebecca showed him her acceptance papers, he cried.
“You’ll be better than I ever was,” he told her.
Elaine reacted differently.
“You are throwing away your education to crawl through dirt.”
“I want to serve.”
“You want attention.”
Elaine cared deeply about appearances.
A daughter in a tailored suit working at the family investment firm impressed people.
A daughter sleeping in barracks did not.
Curtis, four years younger, watched Rebecca leave and learned exactly which parent controlled the family narrative.
During Rebecca’s first deployment, Thomas wrote every week.
Elaine rarely answered Rebecca’s calls.
When she did, she complained.
“You missed your brother’s graduation.”
“You embarrassed me at the club.”
“Your father spends too much time worrying about you.”
Then Rebecca’s assignments became sensitive.
Her communications became restricted.
Months passed between calls.
Elaine used the silence.
She told Thomas that Rebecca had stopped writing.
She intercepted two letters.
She deleted voicemails.
She convinced Curtis that Rebecca considered herself too important for them.
Only Thomas continued believing in her.
Before Rebecca’s final deployment, he sent her one message:
Whatever happens, this home is still yours.
Three months later, Rebecca’s aircraft went down during an operation the government refused to discuss publicly.
Her family received no details.
Elaine told everyone Rebecca had deserted.
Thomas refused to believe it.
