Chapter 14 - The Employee Who Kept Everything
Lauren’s former assistant was named Madison Cole.
She had quit six weeks earlier.
Grant met her at his attorney’s office.
Madison brought a laptop and a sealed envelope.
“I should have spoken sooner,” she said.
“Why didn’t you?”
“I needed the job.”
Grant understood shame.
He had seen it trap witnesses before.
Madison opened a folder.
Lauren’s campaign timeline stretched across the screen.
Photo sessions.
Resort partnerships.
Sponsored clothing.
Travel expenses.
Beside Daisy’s name was a red label:
Do not include.
Madison played a voice note.
Lauren’s voice filled the room.
“Daisy is sweet, but she looks nervous in photographs. The audience does not connect with that.”
Another message followed.
“If she asks about Florida, tell her the school excuse.”
Then Ethan’s voice appeared.
Quiet.
Uncertain.
“This feels wrong.”
Lauren answered.
“She will get over it.”
Grant looked at Ethan.
He was sitting across the table.
He had agreed.
Not enthusiastically.
Not proudly.
But clearly.
Ethan covered his face.
“I could have stopped it.”
“Yes,” Grant said.
Madison handed over the sealed envelope.
Inside were printed messages between Lauren and the resort photographer.
Lauren had requested a “natural family-of-three experience.”
She specifically instructed him not to mention Daisy.
One final message had been sent after the vacation began.
Lauren wrote:
The extra child is being handled. Keep all content focused on Toby.
Daisy was not a daughter in those messages.
She was an extra child.
Ethan stood so quickly that his chair struck the wall.
“I want every account frozen.”
The attorney looked at him.
“Are you prepared to testify against your wife?”
Ethan’s breathing shook.
He thought of Daisy asking why she was unwanted.
He thought of the empty house.
The man at the window.
The trust money.
The photograph caption.
“Yes.”
Grant did not praise him.
Courage after failure was necessary.
It was not heroic.
