Chapter 16 - The Price of Being Chosen
Ethan signed temporary guardianship over to Grant.
He moved out of the family home.
Lauren accused him of betrayal.
“You are destroying us.”
“No,” Ethan said. “I helped you destroy her.”
Lauren’s attorney advised her to remain silent.
She did the opposite.
She posted another video.
This time she cried openly.
She claimed Grant had manipulated Daisy for control of the trust.
The response was immediate.
Madison released no private information.
She did not need to.
Several brands quietly ended their partnerships.
The resort canceled the campaign.
A children’s clothing company requested repayment.
Lauren’s carefully built business began collapsing.
She blamed Daisy.
In a text message to Ethan, she wrote:
None of this would have happened if you had handled her.
Ethan forwarded the message to his attorney.
Then to Grant.
Grant did not show Daisy.
Some truths protected children by remaining outside their sight.
The trust court froze all accounts.
A financial examiner recovered more than sixty thousand dollars in improper withdrawals.
Lauren had used Daisy’s money to build an image that excluded her.
The judge ordered immediate repayment.
The family home was placed under review because trust funds had paid part of the mortgage.
Lauren’s mother offered her a place to stay.
But only if Toby came too.
Ethan refused.
“Toby is not a shield.”
Lauren laughed bitterly.
“You think Grant will let you keep him?”
“This is not about Grant.”
“It is always about your father.”
“No.”
Ethan looked at her with exhausted clarity.
“This is about two children who needed parents and got adults obsessed with being comfortable.”
Lauren stared at him.
For the first time, she had no performance ready.
The custody evaluator interviewed Toby.
He said he loved both parents.
Then he added quietly, “Mom gets mad when pictures do not look right.”
