Chapter 4 - The Story Lauren Prepared
Outside the Florida resort, Lauren recovered first.
She placed both hands over her chest.
“This is being misunderstood.”
Grant looked at her.
“Then explain it.”
“We asked Mrs. Hall to check in.”
“She was never asked.”
Lauren blinked once.
Ethan turned toward her.
“You told me she confirmed.”
“She must have forgotten.”
Grant’s voice hardened.
“She forgot that an eight-year-old child was alone for more than eighteen hours?”
Several resort guests had stopped near the entrance.
Lauren noticed them.
Her expression shifted immediately.
She lowered her voice.
“Can we discuss this privately?”
“No.”
“Grant, people are watching.”
“They should.”
Ethan looked around nervously.
“This is a family matter.”
Grant stepped closer.
“You abandoned a child. That stopped being private the moment she called me in the dark.”
Toby moved toward Daisy.
“Why didn’t you come with us?”
Daisy looked at him.
“Mom said I had school.”
Toby frowned.
“You didn’t.”
Lauren’s hand closed around his shoulder.
“That’s enough.”
Toby pulled away slightly.
“I heard you tell Dad the hotel only had rooms for four.”
The silence changed.
Ethan stared at Lauren.
Grant watched both of them.
Daisy gripped the fabric of Grant’s shirt.
Lauren gave Toby a warning look.
But the boy had already said too much.
Grant unfolded the flight itinerary.
Five seats had originally been booked.
Then one ticket was canceled.
Daisy’s.
The cancellation occurred eleven days before the trip.
The school excuse had been invented afterward.
Grant handed the itinerary to Ethan.
“You knew she was not coming.”
Ethan looked down.
His face tightened.
Lauren spoke quickly.
“We had to make a difficult decision.”
Daisy’s breathing changed.
Grant placed one protective hand behind her head.
“What decision?”
Lauren’s eyes moved toward the resort doors.
Then toward the watching guests.
Finally, she whispered, “The family needed time without complications.”
Daisy heard her.
