Chapter 7 - The Room for Four
The resort manager approached carefully.
“Is everything all right?”
Lauren forced a smile.
“Yes. It is a misunderstanding.”
Grant turned toward him.
“What name is the reservation under?”
Ethan answered quickly.
“Bennett.”
The manager checked his tablet.
“Two adults. One child.”
Grant looked at Toby.
Then Daisy.
Lauren stepped between them.
“We made the reservation months ago.”
Grant removed another document from his bag.
The original booking confirmation.
Two adults.
Two children.
The reservation had been altered nine days earlier.
Daisy’s name had been removed.
The room type had also been changed to a family suite marketed for “two parents and one child.”
A promotional photograph package had been added.
Grant showed the confirmation to Ethan.
“Who changed this?”
Ethan stared at the screen.
Lauren answered.
“I did.”
“Why?”
“Because Daisy was not coming.”
“Why was the photography package added afterward?”
Lauren’s lips tightened.
“That has nothing to do with this.”
Grant already knew.
He had found the resort brochure in their kitchen trash.
A page had been folded around the phrase:
Capture Your Perfect Family Vacation.
Daisy saw the words.
Her face crumpled.
Lauren noticed too late.
“It was just advertising.”
“No,” Grant said. “It was the reason.”
Ethan looked at his wife.
“What reason?”
Lauren’s composure began to crack.
She had been building a lifestyle account online.
Hundreds of photographs.
Matching clothes.
Elegant meals.
Toby smiling between his parents.
Daisy rarely appeared.
When she did, she was placed at the edge of the frame.
Lauren had arranged the Florida trip around a sponsored family campaign.
The resort expected polished photographs of a happy family of three.
Daisy did not fit the image Lauren had sold.
“You left a child alone,” Grant said, “because she interfered with your branding.”
Lauren’s eyes flashed.
“You don’t understand how much money was involved.”
Daisy looked at her.
“You made money because I wasn’t there?”
Lauren said nothing.
