Chapter 19 - The House Without Pictures

Months passed.

Daisy began therapy.

At first, she spoke only about practical things.

Doors.

Phones.

Food.

Who would be home.

What time Grant would return.

She asked him to write his schedule on the refrigerator every morning.

Grant did.

He never teased her.

He never called it unnecessary.

Trust returned through repetition.

A locked door that opened when expected.

A phone call answered.

A meal waiting.

A promise kept.

Ethan attended parenting classes and individual counseling.

He sold the family home.

Daisy’s trust was reimbursed from his share of the proceeds.

He moved into a modest apartment with two bedrooms.

One for Toby.

The second remained empty.

He did not decorate it for Daisy.

He did not assume she would come.

He simply told her, “There is space if you ever choose it.”

Lauren moved in with her mother.

Her business disappeared.

Most of her followers moved on within weeks.

The perfect family brand proved as shallow as the photographs that created it.

She sent Daisy letters.

Grant gave them to the therapist.

Daisy chose not to read them.

That choice was respected.

One afternoon, Ethan visited the cottage.

Daisy allowed him to sit on the porch.

He brought the framed adoption photograph.

Forever starts today.

He placed it beside her.

“I wrote that because I meant it.”

Daisy looked at him.

“Then why did forever stop?”

Ethan swallowed.

“Because I stopped acting like love required courage.”

She looked toward the lake.

“I don’t want to call you Dad right now.”

His face tightened.

But he nodded.

“You do not have to.”

“Can I call you Ethan?”

“Yes.”

She studied him.

“Will you still come?”

“If you invite me.”

“What if I don’t?”

“I will still work to become someone safe.”

Daisy picked up the frame.

She did not hug him.

She did not forgive him.

But when he left, she did not turn the photograph facedown.

👉 Ethan had finally stopped demanding forgiveness—and that was the first reason Daisy began considering it.
