Chapter 3 - What Emma Had Been Told to Say

Rachel did not interrogate her daughter.
She knew better.
She simply stayed close.
A child specialist later asked gentle, age-appropriate questions.
Emma spoke in fragments.
“Grandma says Mommy yells.”
“Aunt Vanessa says Daddy leaves.”
“Chair bad.”
“Cry for picture.”
Rachel felt physically sick.
Cry for picture.
Rebecca obtained copies of the trust petition.
The attached photographs showed Emma crying beside the staircase.
Emma with a bruise.
Emma hiding under a blanket.
Each image was captioned as evidence of “fear and instability in the Carter household.”
Rachel stared at them.
She recognized the staircase photo.
It had been taken the day Vanessa babysat Emma.
Vanessa had texted:
She's missing you today ❤️
Rachel had thought it was sweet.
Now the same image was being used against her.
Daniel arrived that evening.
He didn't say anything dramatic.
He simply walked into the hospital room, saw Emma, and broke.
Rachel watched him kneel beside the bed.
“Hey, bug.”
Emma reached for him.
“Daddy.”
He held her carefully.
Then looked at Rachel.
“What happened?”
She told him everything.
When she finished, Daniel asked:
“Who is D.H.?”
“The message sender.”
Rebecca had already started tracing the clue.
D.H. wasn't random.
The initials belonged to David Hale.
Margaret's former accountant.
Daniel frowned.
“He retired years ago.”
Rebecca corrected him.
“He was fired.”
“Why?”
She opened an old file.
David Hale had accused Margaret of diverting money from family accounts.
Daniel's father dismissed the complaint.
Margaret said David was bitter.
Then David disappeared from Carter finances.
Rebecca found a current number.
Rachel called.
David answered.
“You got my message.”
“Yes.”
“Then Margaret knows I'm talking.”
Rachel looked at Daniel.
“What exactly did she do?”
David hesitated.
“Your daughter's trust is only part of it.”
Daniel leaned toward the phone.
“What does that mean?”
David continued.
“Margaret has been moving money for years.”
“How much?”
“Millions.”
Silence.
“And Vanessa?”
David exhaled.
“Vanessa isn't just helping her.”
Rachel's stomach tightened.
“She was hired for it.”
Daniel looked stunned.
“Hired by whom?”
David answered:
May you like
“Your mother.”
👉 Vanessa hadn't simply become cruel after joining the family—David claimed Margaret brought her into the Carter home for a reason.
