Chapter 9 - Daniel's Real Signature
Rebecca brought Daniel a document.
He stared.
“I signed this.”
It wasn't forged.
Six months earlier, Margaret had asked him to approve routine restructuring paperwork.
He signed quickly.
One page granted temporary voting proxy authority over several family-held shares if he became unavailable during travel.
He remembered.
It seemed harmless.
The proxy holder:
Margaret.
Rebecca looked at him.
“This is valid.”
Daniel went pale.
“How much authority?”
“Enough to matter during the merger vote.”
Rachel's stomach tightened.
They didn't need the custody scheme if Daniel simply remained “unavailable.”
Then she noticed the timing.
The merger vote had originally been scheduled while Daniel was on the business trip from which he returned early.
If he had stayed away as planned, Margaret could potentially exercise the proxy.
The trust case was backup pressure.
Not the only path.
Daniel whispered:
“She already had what she needed.”
“Not quite,” Rebecca said.
The proxy expired if Daniel revoked it.
He did immediately.
Margaret's leverage vanished.
But investigators wanted to know why she built the more dangerous scheme if the proxy existed.
David Hale had an answer.
Because the merger agreement required additional approvals Margaret couldn't obtain through proxy alone.
Emma's trust was one.
Rachel's spouse-consent rights were another.
So Margaret built multiple pressure points.
Remove Rachel.
Control Emma.
Pressure Daniel.
Close merger.
Vanessa discovered the complexity and designed her own betrayal.
Peter billed everyone.
A conspiracy made of people who didn't trust one another.
Then Daniel remembered an email from his mother.
Stay through Monday. The merger meeting moved.
He had almost extended his trip.
Rachel looked at him.
“You came back because?”
“Emma's birthday.”
Margaret had forgotten one thing.
Daniel promised his daughter he would never miss her birthday dinner.
That promise brought him home early.
The entire timeline cracked.
Then Rebecca received a forensic report.
Peter Lawson had altered one appendix after Daniel signed the proxy packet.
Daniel's signature was real.
But the page containing expanded emergency authority had been inserted later.
Now even the authentic document carried fraud around it.
Peter's exposure worsened.
He stopped cooperating.
Then, three days later, he requested a deal.
His condition:
He would testify about Margaret and Vanessa.
In return, prosecutors consider his cooperation.
Rebecca looked at Rachel.
“He says he has the original planning file.”
“What planning file?”
Peter called it:
PROJECT LILY.
