Chapter 7 - Vanessa Wasn't Just a Pawn
Vanessa's investment company was called Red Lily Holdings.
Rachel stared at the name.
Lily.
Her daughter.
David traced the ownership.
Vanessa controlled sixty percent.
Margaret controlled forty.
If the merger happened, both women profited.
Vanessa potentially more.
Rachel's sympathy disappeared.
Grief may have made Vanessa vulnerable once.
But somewhere along the way, she became a willing partner.
Daniel asked:
“How did she get money to invest?”
David answered:
“She didn't.”
Margaret provided the capital.
In exchange, Vanessa agreed to help manufacture the custody case.
But Red Lily's operating agreement contained a hidden clause.
If Margaret became legally incapacitated or implicated in financial misconduct, Vanessa automatically gained full control.
Rachel stared.
“She planned to take Margaret's share too.”
David nodded.
Vanessa was preparing to betray Margaret.
Rebecca found more.
A draft email from Vanessa to Peter Lawson.
Once the merger closes, Margaret becomes the liability.
Peter replied:
Understood.
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“So Peter is with Vanessa?”
“Looks that way.”
The conspiracy fractured.
Margaret thought Vanessa was her instrument.
Vanessa thought Peter would help remove Margaret afterward.
Peter appeared to be collecting fees from both.
Then investigators located another message.
Vanessa to Peter:
If Rachel reacts violently on camera, Margaret thinks she wins.
Peter:
And what do we win?
Vanessa:
Everything after Margaret falls.
Rachel's stomach turned.
The kitchen incident had layers.
Margaret wanted footage against Rachel.
Vanessa wanted footage that would later show Margaret orchestrating abuse.
Each woman planned to betray the other.
Emma was simply trapped in the middle.
Then Vanessa's attorney contacted Rebecca.
Vanessa wanted to cooperate.
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“Of course she does.”
Vanessa offered evidence against Margaret.
In return, she wanted favorable treatment.
Rachel asked one question:
“Did she admit hurting Emma?”
Rebecca's expression hardened.
“Yes.”
Rachel looked away.
Nothing Vanessa offered could undo that.
Still, the evidence mattered.
Vanessa turned over messages.
Bank records.
Audio files.
And one recording from three months earlier.
Margaret's voice:
“When this is done, Rachel loses Emma, Daniel signs the merger, and you disappear.”
Vanessa:
“Disappear?”
Margaret:
“You were never family.”
Vanessa had learned Margaret planned to discard her too.
That was when Red Lily's hidden clause appeared.
Betrayal had become mutual.
Then Vanessa produced her strongest evidence.
An audio recording of Margaret speaking with Peter Lawson.
Peter:
“What if Rachel never loses custody?”
Margaret:
“Then we make Daniel believe she should.”
