Chapter 14 - The Verdict

The trial lasted eleven days.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
Robert sat between Daniel and Rosalie when they returned.
Bianca entered wearing gray.
No diamonds.
No designer coat.
No carefully practiced smile.
She looked toward Robert.
He didn't look back.
The clerk read the verdicts.
Guilty of conspiracy to commit financial fraud.
Guilty of forgery.
Guilty of attempted theft.
Guilty of falsifying documents connected to Livia's school placement.
Guilty on the child-endangerment count related to the forced haircut and documented pattern of intimidation.
Not every count went the prosecution's way.
But enough did.
More than enough.
Bianca's face remained blank until the judge ordered her remanded pending sentencing.
Then she turned.
"Robert!"
He finally looked at her.
"You know me!"
He said nothing.
"I loved you!"
Robert's voice was quiet.
"No."
The entire courtroom seemed to stop.
"You loved access."
Bianca's eyes filled with furious tears.
"I gave you three years!"
Robert looked toward Rosalie.
Then back at Bianca.
"You took three years from my daughter."
The deputies led her away.
Adrian received a reduced sentence because of his cooperation, but he still lost his financial licenses permanently and faced prison time.
Bianca received several years in state custody, followed by supervised release and restitution orders.
The stolen money was recovered through frozen accounts and sale of the Connecticut property.
Sophie's education account was restored with legitimate funds under Ethan's control.
The court also entered protective orders preventing Bianca from contacting Livia.
For Robert, there was no celebration.
Justice didn't put Caroline back in the room.
It didn't restore Livia's hair overnight.
It didn't erase the nights she had believed her father wanted to send her away.
So Robert stopped thinking of justice as a dramatic moment.
Justice became breakfast.
School pickup.
Therapy appointments.
Letting Livia choose her clothes even when nothing matched.
Reading the same bedtime story four times.
Never dismissing "I don't like her" or "He scares me" because an adult seemed charming.
Months later, Robert stood in the kitchen while Livia ate pancakes.
Her hair had grown enough to curl behind her ears.
She caught him staring.
"What?"
"Nothing."
She narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"You're doing the dad face."
"What dad face?"
"The crying-but-not-crying face."
Rosalie laughed from the counter.
"She got you."
Robert smiled.
Livia touched her hair.
"Do you think Mommy would like it short?"
Robert's throat tightened.
"Your mom would've liked anything that made you smile."
Livia considered that.
Then smiled.
The doorbell rang.
Daniel stood outside with a folder.
Robert groaned.
"No more folders."
Daniel laughed.
"This one's good."
Inside was the final court order.
The Balboa trust protections had been reaffirmed.
Every attempted amendment void.
Every disputed claim dismissed.
Livia's inheritance was completely secure.
But Daniel had one more document.
Something Robert had requested himself.
Rosalie read the first page.
Then looked at her son.
"Are you sure?"
Robert nodded.
"Absolutely."
It was a new family governance agreement.
Not transferring Livia's money.
Protecting her independence.
Until adulthood, no future spouse of Robert's could serve as trustee.
No romantic partner could alter her education, residence, medical care, or inheritance without independent review.
Rosalie smiled through tears.
"Caroline would be proud."
Robert looked toward Livia.
"I hope so."
But one final thing remained.
Something Livia had asked him to do when the case ended.

And the next morning, Robert took her back to the room where everything had begun.
👉 Bianca had finally been punished and Livia's future was secure—but healing required one last return to the bridal room where the little girl had once screamed for her father.
