Chapter 6 - Caroline's Last Signature

Robert followed Rosalie into his late father's study.

Livia stayed with Robert's sister downstairs, safely away from Bianca.

For several seconds, Rosalie couldn't speak.

Robert shut the door.

"What did Caroline sign?"

Rosalie sat slowly.

"Something she asked me not to show you unless it became necessary."

"Necessary?"

"Unless someone tried to separate you from Livia."

Robert's anger disappeared.

"What?"

Rosalie opened the lower drawer of the old desk.

From beneath a stack of family photographs, she removed a sealed blue envelope.

Robert stared at it.

"How long has that been there?"

"Three years."

"Mom."

"Caroline was scared."

"Of what?"

"Not of Bianca. She hadn't met Bianca."

Rosalie handed him the envelope.

"Of anyone who might someday realize what Livia inherited."

Robert opened it.

Inside was a notarized statement from Caroline.

She had signed it six weeks before her death.

It explained that because Robert's family wealth would eventually pass primarily to Livia, Caroline wanted safeguards placed around the child's inheritance.

No spouse of Robert's.

No future guardian.

No school administrator.

No outside trustee.

No one could alter the trust without independent review from Daniel Mercer and approval from a second fiduciary.

Robert looked up.

"So Bianca couldn't have changed it anyway."

"No."

"Then why hide this from me?"

Rosalie swallowed.

"There was another reason."

She handed him a second page.

Caroline had written a letter.

Not legal language.

A wife speaking to her husband.

Robert read silently.

If you're reading this, somebody may be making you choose between love and our daughter.

His throat tightened.

Please don't hate yourself for wanting to love again.

He stopped reading.

Rosalie touched his hand.

"Keep going."

Robert forced himself.

But watch the person who treats Livia differently when you leave the room.

He closed his eyes.

That line cut deeper than anything Bianca had said.

Caroline had understood something he hadn't.

Cruelty often waited for privacy.

Robert continued.

Livia is trusting. She will try to earn love from anyone you love. Make sure nobody uses that against her.

His hands shook.

At the bottom was a final sentence.

Believe her the first time she looks afraid.

Robert lowered the letter.

He remembered every small moment he'd dismissed.

Livia not wanting Bianca to brush her hair.

Livia asking if she could eat dinner in the kitchen.

Livia suddenly wetting the bed after Bianca moved into the mansion.

Livia saying she wanted Grandma to sleep over.

He had explained each one away.

Grief.

Transition.

A new household.

He had been wrong.

Rosalie wiped her eyes.

"Caroline wasn't predicting Bianca."

"No."

"She was protecting Livia from whoever came next."

Robert folded the letter carefully.

His phone rang.

Security.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

"What do you mean she's gone?"

Rosalie stood.

Robert listened.

Bianca had not left through the front gate.

She had entered the service wing.

A side door had been found open.

And one of Robert's cars was missing.

But that wasn't the worst part.

Security had reviewed the garage camera.

Bianca had left carrying a black document case.

Daniel's trust documents had been sitting on the bridal vanity.

Now they were gone.

👉 Bianca had fled the mansion with documents she had spent months trying to obtain—and Robert realized the canceled wedding might only have triggered her real plan.
