Chapter 10

PART 10:

The wife testified after Caleb.

Her voice shook once at the beginning.

Then steadied.

“I spent years trying to earn a place in that family,” she said. “That night, I realized I never needed to. My child and I deserved safety whether she approved of us or not.”

Eleanor was convicted.

Her sentence was not as long as Caleb wanted.

But it was real.

Probation after jail time.

Permanent restraining order.

No contact with the wife.

No contact with the baby.

No control over Sterling family assets connected to Caleb.

Most importantly, her power was gone.

The world she had built on fear no longer answered when she called.

Months later, Caleb and his wife moved into a smaller house near the water.

No marble dining room.

No chandeliers.

No portraits of dead Sterling men watching from the walls.

Just sunlight through the kitchen window.

A nursery painted soft green.

A backyard where their son would one day learn to walk.

On the first morning there, Caleb’s wife stood barefoot in the kitchen holding the baby against her shoulder.

He was sleepy and warm, one tiny fist curled against her collarbone.

Caleb came up behind them and wrapped his arms around both.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then his wife looked around the simple kitchen and smiled.

“No one here gets to decide if I’m worthy.”

Caleb kissed the side of her head.

“No,” he said. “You already were.”

The baby stirred.

Outside, the water moved softly under the morning light.

And for the first time in a long time, the wife did not feel like a guest in someone else’s family.
