Chapter 5

PART 5:

Eleanor began building a case.

She spoke to relatives about his wife’s “mood swings.”

She told the family doctor the pregnancy had made her “emotionally fragile.”

She told board members Caleb was distracted because his wife created conflict at home.

She even suggested, very carefully, that after the baby was born, it might be safer if the family had legal protections in place.

The wife heard pieces of it.

Whispers.

Looks.

Rooms going quiet.

But whenever she told Caleb, he believed her.

That only made Eleanor more dangerous.

Because Eleanor understood something clearly.

As long as Caleb stood beside his wife, she could not win.

So she waited until Caleb had to leave.

The board sent him to Chicago for an emergency investor meeting two weeks before the due date.

He did not want to go, but the crisis threatened hundreds of employees.

His wife told him to go.

“I’m nine months pregnant, not made of glass,” she said, trying to smile.

Caleb kissed her forehead.

“I’ll be back tomorrow morning.”

Eleanor called that afternoon.

Family dinner, she said.

A peace offering.

The wife almost refused.

Then Eleanor said Caleb had asked them to try.

That was a lie.

But it was the kind of lie that used love as bait.

The wife went because she was tired of war.

She arrived wearing a simple dark dress, her belly heavy, her back aching, her wedding ring still on her finger.

The dining room was full of Sterling relatives.

Not close relatives.

The kind Eleanor liked to summon when she wanted an audience.

The meal began politely.

Then Eleanor stood.

She raised her glass.

And began the humiliation.

She spoke about legacy.

About sacrifice.

About women who understood responsibility.

Then she turned to her daughter-in-law.

“Some women marry into families they do not understand,” Eleanor said. “Some believe pregnancy gives them a place they never earned.”

The wife set down her fork.

“Eleanor, please.”

But Eleanor was done pretending.

She stepped closer.

“You were never worthy of this family.”

That was the moment everyone froze.

And when the wife said, “Caleb chose me,” Eleanor’s eyes sharpened like glass.

👉 But the real danger came after dinner, when every relative disappeared and Eleanor followed her into the corridor…
