Chapter 2

PART 2:

Two hours later, the wife was on a hospital stretcher.

Weak.

Dizzy.

Barely able to keep her eyes open.

A nurse pushed her fast through the bright emergency hallway while another checked the monitor strapped across her stomach.

The baby’s heartbeat flickered on the screen.

Too fast.

Then too slow.

The wife tried to speak, but her throat felt dry and full of fire.

Eleanor stood near the nurse’s station, perfectly dressed, perfectly calm, telling the doctor, “She became hysterical. She has always been unstable.”

The wife heard it.

Even through the pain.

Even through the fear.

That old word.

Unstable.

The word rich people used when they wanted cruelty to sound like concern.

The wife forced her hand up.

Her fingers shook as she pointed toward a phone in the nurse’s hand.

Then toward the hospital tablet showing the security app still open from the mansion.

Her voice came out broken.

“Check the footage.”

The nurse’s face changed.

The doctor looked at Eleanor.

Eleanor’s lips parted.

For the first time that night, she looked unsure.

Then the doors to the waiting area opened hard.

Caleb Sterling walked in.

His suit was wrinkled from travel.

His hair was disheveled.

His face was pale, but his eyes were colder than anyone had ever seen them.

The hallway went silent.

Eleanor turned toward him.

“Caleb—”

He did not let her finish.

“Mom,” he said, his voice low and flat, “the police already have the video.”

Eleanor stopped breathing.

The wife closed her eyes as tears slipped down her temples.

Not because the pain was gone.

May you like

Because the truth had finally arrived before Eleanor could bury it.

👉 But before that video exposed everything, Caleb had once believed his mother would eventually accept the woman he loved…
