Chapter 7
PART 7:
Caleb had updated the mansion security system two months earlier after a break-in at a nearby estate.
The cameras uploaded backup footage to a cloud server and to his phone whenever manual shutdown occurred.
Eleanor knew the old system.
Not the new one.
The wife, dizzy and terrified, remembered Caleb telling her the update was “overkill.”
Now it was the only witness left.
By the time the driver brought her to the hospital, Eleanor had already written the story.
His wife got emotional.
She fell.
She refused help.
She was unstable.
But the baby’s heart rate told the doctor something was wrong.
The bruises on her arm told the nurse more.
And the wife, fighting through contractions and fear, used the last strength she had to point toward the truth.
“Check the footage.”
When Caleb landed, his phone had thirty-seven missed alerts.
Motion detected.
Manual camera shutdown.
Emergency audio trigger.
He opened the backup in the airport terminal.
He watched his mother block the door.
Watched her grab his wife.
Watched the shove.
Watched the moment his wife begged for 911.
Watched Eleanor turn off the camera and think darkness would protect her.
Caleb did not call his mother.
He called the police.
Then he called the hospital.
Then he drove faster than he had ever driven in his life.
Now, standing in that hallway, he looked at Eleanor like he was seeing her clearly for the first time.
Not as his mother.
As the person who had almost cost him everything.
Eleanor tried to recover.
“Caleb, you don’t understand. She was hysterical. I was trying to protect the baby.”
He stared at her.
“You heard my wife ask for an ambulance.”
Eleanor’s mouth tightened.
“You are emotional.”
“No,” Caleb said. “I watched the video.”
The words hit harder than shouting.
Two police officers entered behind him.
Eleanor looked from their uniforms to Caleb’s face.
“You called the police on your mother?”
Caleb’s jaw trembled once.
Then hardened.

“I called the police for my wife.”
