Chapter 4

PART 4:
Sophia remembered the old spare key in the garage.

The one Lucas kept above the workbench.

She waited until Eleanor went to the kitchen.

Then she wrapped the baby in a blanket, slipped through the laundry room, and ran.

Audrey saw her through the window.

She shouted.

Eleanor came after her.

Sophia made it to the car.

Eleanor yanked the driver’s door open and grabbed Sophia’s arm again.

Sophia hit the side mirror.

Pain shot through her wrist.

But she didn’t let go of the baby.

A neighbor opened her front door.

That saved them.

Eleanor released Sophia and smiled like nothing had happened.

“She’s emotional,” Eleanor called out. “New mothers, you know.”

Sophia drove with one hand trembling on the wheel and the baby crying in the back seat.

At Fort Brighton Medical Center, the staff took the baby immediately.

Fever.

Dehydration.

Not catastrophic.

But serious enough that the doctor’s face tightened when Sophia explained the timeline.

“You should have come sooner,” he said gently.

Sophia looked at the floor.

“I tried.”

Then her body finally gave out.

Stress.

Exhaustion.

Postpartum complications she had ignored because there was always someone telling her she was weak.

They admitted her for observation.

That morning, Lucas arrived straight from base.

Still in uniform.

Still carrying his duffel bag.

He had received a message from the neighbor, not from Sophia.

The neighbor had found his number taped inside the garage cabinet, where Lucas kept emergency contacts.

Lucas walked into the hospital expecting fear.

He did not expect to find his mother standing over Sophia’s bed.

He did not expect to hear Eleanor telling the doctor that Sophia was unstable.

He did not expect Audrey to say, “Honestly, Lucas, you should consider whether she’s safe with the baby.”

May you like

And he did not expect Sophia to look at him like she was afraid he would not believe her.

👉 But Lucas had not come to that hospital empty-handed.
