Chapter 9

PART 9:
That night, Sophia sat in the nursery rocking their son while Lucas warmed a bottle in the kitchen.

The house was peaceful.

No footsteps in the hallway.

No voice correcting her.

No one telling her she was too weak to be a mother.

Lucas came in and leaned against the doorframe.

For a second, he just watched her.

The same way he used to watch the baby monitor from base.

Only now, he was there.

Sophia looked up.

“What?”

Lucas smiled softly.

“I was thinking he’s lucky.”

She glanced down at their son.

“Because he has you?”

Lucas walked over and knelt beside the rocking chair.

“No. Because he has a mother who fought for him when nobody was clapping, nobody was helping, and everybody was trying to make her feel small.”

Sophia’s eyes filled again.

But this time, the tears did not come from fear.

Lucas touched her bruised wrist gently.

It was fading now.

Yellow at the edges.

Healing.

Like the rest of them.

A month later, a letter arrived from Eleanor.

Lucas did not open it right away.

He waited until Sophia was ready.

Inside were three pages of excuses.

Not an apology.

Not really.

Lucas folded it once and placed it back in the envelope.

Then he put it in a file with the court order.

Sophia watched him.

“Are you okay?”

Lucas looked toward the nursery, where their son slept safely.

“I am now.”

Then he picked up the house keys and placed them in Sophia’s palm.

“They’re yours too,” he said. “They always were.”

Sophia closed her fingers around them.

For the first time since becoming a mother, she did not feel like a guest in her own life.

May you like

She felt home.

ENDING QUESTION:
Do you think Lucas did enough by cutting Eleanor off, or should a mother who endangers a sick newborn lose every chance to come back into the family?
