PART 5:
Eleanor saw Lucas enter and instantly changed her voice.
“Oh, thank God. Lucas, she’s been hysterical. We were only trying to help.”
Sophia lifted her head.
“Lucas…”
Eleanor cut her off.
“She fought me. She ran out like a child. She put your son in danger.”
Lucas took the baby from the nurse and held him carefully.
His jaw tightened.
But he stayed calm.
Then the doctor mentioned bruising.
Eleanor rolled her eyes.
“She bruises easily.”
Sophia’s tears spilled over.
That was when Eleanor said it.
“She had to learn respect.”
Not quietly.
Not by accident.
In front of everyone.
And that was the moment Lucas stopped looking like a son.
He looked like a soldier assessing a threat.
“How long was he sick?” he asked.
Audrey smirked.
“The baby is her problem.”
Lucas stared at her.
No anger on his face.
No yelling.
Just a silence so steady that Audrey’s smile faded.
He looked toward the chair beside Sophia’s bed.
Her cracked phone sat inside her hospital bag.
Next to it was his green military duffel.
Half open.
Inside, tucked near a folded undershirt, was the small portable receiver from the nursery camera.
Lucas had packed it by habit before training.
He had checked it from base whenever the Wi-Fi connected.
But the last two days had been strange.
The feed kept cutting out.
At first, he thought the camera was glitching.
Then, late that night, while sitting in a barracks hallway, he replayed a saved motion clip.
He saw Sophia standing in the nursery with the baby.
He saw Eleanor take the phone.
He saw Audrey standing in the doorway.
He saw Eleanor block Sophia from leaving.
He heard enough.
Not everything.
But enough.
Lucas had not driven to the hospital alone.
He had called the Military Police because the incident involved family housing connected to his service record.
He had called the hospital social worker.
He had called his attorney, the same attorney who handled the paperwork after his father died.
And before walking into the room, he had handed copies of the video clips to all three.
Now he looked at Eleanor.
“You forgot the nursery camera.”
