Chapter 1 - The Phone on the Stairs

The stroller was already halfway down the staircase when Emma screamed.

“LILY!”

I ran into the foyer just as the stroller hit the final steps.

Emma threw herself forward.

She ripped my ten-month-old daughter out of it and twisted her own body around Lily before crashing onto the hardwood.

The stroller flipped onto its side.

Lily screamed.

Emma held her tightly.

Then Vanessa came running down the stairs.

“She pushed the baby!”

My brain stopped processing anything except my daughter crying.

I saw the overturned stroller.

Emma on the floor.

Lily in her arms.

I crossed the foyer and slapped Emma.

“What did you do to my child?!”

Emma’s head snapped sideways.

But she never loosened her hold on Lily.

She stared at me.

Not guilty.

Devastated.

“I JUST SAVED HER!”

I froze.

Vanessa moved beside me.

“Daniel, don't listen to her. I saw—”

“Dad…”

A small voice came from the staircase.

I turned.

My six-year-old daughter Sophie stood three steps above us.

Her light blue dress shook around her knees.

She was holding a phone.

“Dad… I saw everything.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

I had never seen someone lose color so quickly.

Sophie lifted the phone.

Vanessa took one step backward.

Then another.

I looked from Sophie to Vanessa.

“What did you see?”

Vanessa interrupted.

“She’s confused. She came in after—”

Sophie shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice was tiny.

But certain.

“I was there.”

The foyer went silent except for Lily crying.

Then Sophie said:

“She pushed Lily.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Daniel, she’s six.”

Emma slowly stood, still holding my daughter.

I looked at the woman I had just hit.

Then at my wife.

Then back at Sophie.

“What’s on the phone?”

Sophie tightened both hands around it.

“I recorded her.”

Vanessa lunged toward the staircase.

I stepped directly into her path.

“Don't.”

She stopped.

For the first time since we married, Vanessa looked afraid of me finding something.

Not angry.

Afraid.

May you like

And that made one thing immediately clear.

Whatever Sophie had recorded wasn’t going to show an accident.
