Chapter 9 - Marcus Was More Than Her Cousin
The final file was a scanned legal record.
Marcus Cole was not Vanessa’s cousin.
He was her half-brother.
Their father had hidden that relationship publicly because Marcus was born from an earlier affair.
Why lie?
Because Marcus had been involved in the failed company.
More deeply than Vanessa admitted.
He had helped manage funds.
When the company collapsed, investigators examined missing investor money.
No charges were ultimately brought against him.
But Caroline’s father had testified that Marcus falsified internal records.
The Carter family hadn't destroyed Vanessa’s family.
Marcus’s misconduct had helped destroy it.
Vanessa spent years blaming Caroline anyway.
Because blaming Caroline was easier than admitting what Marcus had done.
Then I found a letter from Marcus to Vanessa.
Old.
Angry.
**Arthur Carter took everything from us. His daughter has our future. If she dies, Daniel will be easy to work through.**
My skin went cold.
Caroline had preserved it.
That was their motive in one sentence.
Money.
Resentment.
Opportunity.
Then Thomas discovered something important.
Marcus had been communicating with Vanessa throughout our marriage.
Not occasionally.
Almost daily.
Whenever I traveled.
Whenever Emma complained.
Whenever Sophie had an “incident.”
Marcus coached Vanessa.
**Need cleaner documentation.**
**Emma has to go.**
**Daniel is too attached to Sophie. Make him question whether he can manage both kids.**
Then came the stroller message.
Sent that morning.
**One serious scare may force him to replace Emma. Don't overdo it.**
Vanessa replied:
**I know.**
That was horrifying.
Marcus didn't explicitly tell her to push a stroller down stairs.
But he encouraged escalation.
Vanessa chose the method.
Then one final message from Vanessa after Sophie appeared with the phone:
**She recorded it.**
Marcus:
**Get the phone.**
Vanessa:
**Daniel has it.**
Marcus stopped responding.
He knew.
The plan was finished.
The investigation expanded.
Marcus denied everything.
He claimed he was discussing employment strategy and family finances.
But the documents told a larger story.
Then his attorney made contact.
Marcus wanted to cooperate.
Of course he did.
People who build schemes together often become most useful when survival matters more than loyalty.
He offered emails Vanessa believed deleted.
Financial records.
Drafts.
And one recorded conversation.
In it, Vanessa discussed what would happen if Emma failed to catch Lily.
Marcus became quiet.
Then said:
“You said nobody would actually get hurt.”
Vanessa replied:
“If something happens, Daniel will blame Emma first.”
That sentence changed everything.
Vanessa had understood exactly how I would react.
And she was right.
