Chapter 4 - The Room Nobody Used

The third floor had three doors.

A guest room.

A storage closet.

And what Vanessa always called an old utility room.

She said the lock was jammed.

I never cared enough to check.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Vanessa followed us upstairs.

“Daniel, don’t do this.”

I turned.

“This is my house.”

“It’s private.”

“That ended when you pushed Lily down the stairs.”

I unlocked the door.

Inside was not a utility room.

It was an office.

Small.

Organized.

A desk.

Printer.

File cabinet.

Boxes.

On one wall hung photographs.

My family.

Me leaving for work.

Emma entering the house.

Sophie at school pickup.

Lily in her stroller.

My stomach turned.

“Why do you have these?”

Vanessa stood behind me.

No answer.

Then I saw the folders.

**EMMA**

**SOPHIE**

**LILY**

**DANIEL**

I opened Emma’s first.

Copies of her employment records.

A background-check report.

Notes about her finances.

Her son’s address in Arizona.

Then handwritten lines:

**Needs job. Easier to scare than fire.**

Emma stared at the page.

“What does that mean?”

I didn't know.

I opened Sophie's folder.

School records.

Medical notes.

Photos.

Statements Vanessa had typed describing “behavioral instability.”

One page claimed Sophie had violent outbursts.

That she lied frequently.

That she endangered Lily.

My daughter stood beside me reading none of it but watching my face.

“Dad?”

I closed the folder.

“You did nothing wrong.”

Then Lily’s.

Photographs of bruises.

Dates.

Descriptions.

Almost all blamed Emma or Sophie.

Vanessa had been building a record.

But for what?

Then I opened mine.

Business travel.

Bank information.

Insurance.

My late wife Caroline’s estate records.

I froze.

Caroline died two years before I married Vanessa.

Most of her property went to Sophie and Lily through trusts.

Vanessa knew that.

Of course she did.

But then I found a document I had never seen.

A draft petition.

It argued that I was failing to protect the children and that Vanessa should receive temporary sole physical custody if our marriage ended.

Attached were references to Emma’s “negligence” and Sophie’s “behavioral problems.”

Vanessa hadn't just been setting up Emma.

She had been creating a story in which everyone except Vanessa was dangerous.

Then Emma opened the bottom drawer.

Inside was a thick envelope.

Stamped with the name of a private investigator.

The first page contained a photograph of Caroline.

Taken while she was alive.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You investigated my first wife?”

Her face tightened.

“I had reasons.”

“What reasons?”

Then I saw the date.

May you like

The investigation began nine months before Caroline died.

Long before Vanessa and I supposedly met.
