Chapter 3 - The Accidents Around Emma

Emma kept a notebook.
Dates.
Times.
Small details.
At first, I felt embarrassed that my housekeeper had documented my family more carefully than I had.
Then I read it.
March 4.
Lily found crying beside an open basement door.
Vanessa claimed Emma left it open.
Emma had been grocery shopping.
March 19.
Sophie locked inside the pantry.
Vanessa said Emma accidentally turned the key.
Emma had been upstairs doing laundry.
April 2.
Broken glass near Lily’s play mat.
Vanessa blamed Emma for leaving a vase too close to the edge.
Security footage from outside showed Emma had left the house twenty minutes earlier.
Then I reached April 11.
**Sophie missing from bedroom for 47 minutes. Found inside linen closet. Vanessa said Sophie hid there during a tantrum. Sophie said Vanessa told her not to come out.**
I looked at my daughter.
“Did she lock you in there?”
Sophie nodded.
“Why?”
“She said I was bad.”
“What did you do?”
Sophie’s eyes filled.
“I told Emma Lily had a bruise.”
I looked at Vanessa.
Her expression had hardened.
“She needed boundaries.”
“You locked a six-year-old in a closet.”
“For a few minutes.”
“Forty-seven.”
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward Emma’s notebook.
“You’ve been spying on me?”
Emma stood straighter.
“I’ve been protecting the children.”
Vanessa laughed.
“From what? Their stepmother?”
“Yes.”
Silence.
That answer landed hard.
I kept reading.
The pattern was obvious.
Whenever I traveled, something happened.
And almost every time, Vanessa blamed Emma.
Why?
Removing Emma would leave Vanessa alone with the girls.
But there had to be more.
I asked Emma.
“Did Vanessa ever tell you to quit?”
“Twice.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Emma looked at Sophie.
“Because she asked me not to.”
My chest tightened.
Sophie whispered:
“She said she'd leave us alone if Emma left.”
That was a threat.
Not discipline.
Not stress.
Then Emma showed me one final entry.
Two weeks earlier, Vanessa had called an employment agency.
She was trying to hire another housekeeper.
Someone younger.
No references from us required.
And she wanted Emma terminated immediately.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why were you trying to replace her?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Then Emma answered for her.
“Because I found something.”
Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.
I saw panic again.
“What did you find?”
Emma reached into her apron pocket.
A brass key.
“I found this taped underneath Vanessa’s vanity.”
Vanessa moved forward.
“Give me that.”
I took the key first.
“What does it open?”
Emma looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.
“I think it opens the room she told everyone doesn’t exist.”
