Chapter 11 - Why She Hurt Them

Vanessa didn't confess in some dramatic speech.
She minimized.
Deflected.
Blamed.
But pieces emerged.
Ethan cried whenever I left.
He resisted Vanessa.
He called for Claire even though his memories of her were faint.
Sophie became especially attached to Rebecca.
Vanessa hated that.
She wanted to be the center of the household.
Not merely my wife.
Their mother.
Their authority.
Their only source of comfort when I was gone.
But the children never gave her that role emotionally.
So she tried to force it.
Affection became conditional.
Comfort disappeared when I traveled.
Crying brought punishment.
Talking about Rebecca made Vanessa angry.
Pointing toward Claire’s photographs triggered rage.
Vanessa wasn't only trying to control money.
She was competing with a dead woman.
That was the part I had missed.
Every framed photograph of Claire slowly disappeared after our wedding.
Vanessa said she wanted the house to “move forward.”
Claire's favorite blanket went into storage.
Then her children's books.
Then her family photographs.
I let it happen because I thought compromise was necessary for a second marriage.
Meanwhile Ethan and Sophie were learning that missing their mother made Vanessa angry.
The leather strap wasn't the beginning.
It was the point at which her need for control became impossible to hide.
Vanessa's attorney argued she had been overwhelmed.
That childcare pressure contributed.
Maybe stress did exist.
But stress didn't explain stolen trust documents.
It didn't explain planned deception.
It didn't explain turning off cameras.
It didn't explain telling toddlers how to behave during my calls.
Those were choices.
Repeated choices.
The request for temporary access to the children was denied while the investigations and court proceedings continued.
For the first time, Vanessa could no longer reach them.
That evening, Ethan slept through the night at Rebecca’s house.
No screaming.
No waking every hour.
Sophie stopped hiding when footsteps approached.
Small changes.
Huge meaning.
Then Rebecca found something inside Sophie's stuffed rabbit.
A tiny memory card.
No one knew how it got there.
But Ethan pointed at it and said:
“Mommy camera.”
May you like
I recognized the card type immediately.
It belonged to the security camera Vanessa claimed had been broken.
