Chapter 8 - The Recording

The recorder was small.

Old-fashioned.

Claire used one for business notes when she was sick.

I recognized it immediately.

It had been in the cedar chest.

Investigators preserved the device before anyone played it.

The first files were Claire’s voice.

Shopping reminders.

Questions for doctors.

Notes about the children.

Then one recording was different.

Claire sounded weak.

Linda sounded angry.

“I’m asking why you removed me.”

“Because you crossed a line.”

“What line?”

“You asked my attorney what happens to the company shares if I die.”

“That was practical.”

“No. It was intrusive.”

Then Claire said:

“And stop bringing Vanessa around.”

I looked at Thomas.

My heartbeat seemed to stop.

Claire knew Vanessa.

On the recording, Linda became defensive.

“She’s my friend.”

“She asks too many questions about Daniel.”

Vanessa had known about me before Claire died.

Months before I was introduced to her as a stranger.

Claire continued:

“She asked whether Daniel would remarry quickly.”

Linda laughed nervously.

“You’re imagining things.”

“I’m dying, Linda. I’m not stupid.”

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Vanessa hadn’t appeared conveniently during my grief.

She had already been watching my life from the edges.

That thought made me sick.

Then Thomas found another file.

This one was recorded months later.

After Claire’s death.

Linda and Vanessa.

Apparently the recorder had remained in Linda’s possession for a period before somehow returning to Claire's stored belongings.

Vanessa said:

“He trusts me.”

Linda replied:

“Then don’t rush him.”

“What about the kids?”

“They’re babies. Make yourself necessary.”

Necessary.

That was exactly what Vanessa had done.

Meals.

Baths.

Daycare pickups.

Comfort when I broke down.

She had made herself indispensable.

Then Vanessa asked:

“And once we’re married?”

Linda answered:

“Then you work on the structure.”

The recording stopped.

No explicit confession of child abuse.

No plan to injure anyone.

But clear evidence that Vanessa’s entry into my family was not accidental.

I thought that was the worst part.

Then investigators recovered a later audio fragment.

Vanessa’s voice.

Angry.

“Ethan is starting to talk too much.”

Linda replied:

“Then Daniel needs to think he’s going through a difficult phase.”

My hands curled into fists.

May you like

My children hadn’t just been abused.

Their credibility had been targeted before they were old enough to understand what credibility meant.
