Chapter 4 - The Letter Claire Never Wanted Opened Early

The next morning, I called Claire’s attorney.

His name was Thomas Hale.

When I mentioned the blue folder, he became silent.

“Daniel, are you alone?”

“Yes.”

“Where are the children?”

“With my sister.”

“Keep them there.”

I stood up.

“What was in that folder?”

Thomas explained that Claire had created separate trusts for Ethan and Sophie.

Nothing unusual about that.

But shortly before Claire died, she amended one document.

Not because she distrusted me.

Because she was worried about someone else.

“Who?”

Thomas hesitated.

“She didn’t name the person.”

Instead, Claire left instructions.

If anyone ever attempted to isolate the children from me, remove their inherited property, or pressure me to change trustees, Thomas was supposed to give me a sealed statement.

The condition had now arguably been triggered.

“Why didn’t you tell me before?”

“Claire specifically asked me not to burden you unless something happened.”

My throat tightened.

Even while dying, she had been trying to protect us.

“What property?”

That was when Thomas surprised me.

Claire’s grandfather had left her a minority interest in a family-owned real-estate company.

When she died, that interest passed into trust for Ethan and Sophie.

The current estimated value?

A little over $3 million.

I sat down.

I had known Claire inherited something.

I had never paid attention to the details.

Thomas continued.

Someone had contacted his office three months earlier claiming to be acting with my authorization.

They requested information about changing the children’s trustee.

“Who?”

“They never gave a full name.”

“Male or female?”

“Female.”

My skin went cold.

Thomas refused to release anything.

After that, the calls stopped.

I asked whether the missing blue folder could help someone take control of the trust.

“Not by itself.”

Relief.

“But it contains information that could help someone identify accounts, attorneys, and administrative contacts.”

That relief vanished.

I drove directly to Rebecca’s house.

Ethan and Sophie were playing on the rug.

When I entered, Sophie ran to me.

For the first time since I returned home, she smiled.

Then Rebecca handed me something.

“I found this in Ethan’s jacket pocket.”

A small brass key.

Not mine.

Stamped with a storage-company logo.

I recognized the company.

Vanessa rented a private storage unit there after we got married.

She said it held furniture from her old apartment.

I called the company.

The unit was still active.

And according to the payment records available to the renter, Vanessa had visited it the morning before I returned.
