Chapter 5 - The Storage Unit

I didn’t break into Vanessa’s unit.
The key didn’t magically give me the legal right to rummage through everything she owned.
So I called Thomas.
Then I called an attorney of my own.
We documented the key.
We documented where Rebecca found it.
And we contacted the appropriate authorities after reporting the missing estate documents.
The process felt painfully slow.
I wanted to kick the storage door open.
I wanted answers immediately.
Instead, I waited.
That turned out to matter.
Because when the unit was eventually accessed through proper legal channels, Vanessa couldn’t claim I had planted anything.
Inside were ordinary boxes.
Clothes.
Furniture.
Holiday decorations.
Then investigators found a plastic file container.
Inside it was Claire’s blue folder.
My hands started shaking when I saw the photographs.
Vanessa had taken the folder from my house.
There was no innocent explanation anymore.
But that wasn’t all.
There were photocopies of the children’s trust summaries.
Printouts of emails.
Notes about account values.
A handwritten page titled:
**Daniel Travel Schedule.**
Every business trip I had taken in the previous six months was listed.
Dates.
Cities.
Return times.
Next to several dates were short notes.
**Kids easier after 8 PM.**
**Rebecca visits Thursdays. Avoid.**
**Daniel calls around 7.**
I stared at the page until the words blurred.
Vanessa hadn’t simply lost patience when I was away.
She had organized her behavior around my absence.
Another sheet listed behavioral phrases.
**Tell Daniel they fell.**
**Too young to explain clearly.**
**Make video calls short.**
I had to walk outside.
I leaned against my car and vomited.
Thomas stood nearby without saying anything.
Then an investigator showed me one final document.
A draft petition.
It appeared designed to support Vanessa becoming a legal co-trustee or gaining greater financial authority if I became unable to manage the children’s affairs.
But there was a problem.
I wasn’t incapacitated.
I wasn’t missing.
I wasn’t dead.
So why was she preparing for a situation where I couldn’t control my children’s inheritance?
Then Thomas noticed a date written at the top.
The draft had been created before our wedding.
Before Vanessa officially became their stepmother.
May you like
Before she had any reason to know the trust existed.
Unless someone had told her.
