Chapter 2

PART 2:

The man in the black suit turned toward the hallway, his hand lifting as if to call someone in.

The doctor’s voice cut through the room.

“Seal the room.”

The man stopped.

Fiona stood in front of Arthur, one arm holding him back, her eyes locked on the poisoned pillow.

And in that second, every accusation the family had thrown at her began to rot in the air.

Because Fiona had not been hurting the boy.

She had just found the thing that was.

Three weeks earlier, Fiona had not known anything about the family except what everyone in the city whispered.

They owned restaurants.

Nightclubs.

Construction companies.

Private security firms.

And half the police department looked away when their cars rolled through town.

People did not say their name out loud unless they had to.

Fiona was a pediatric night nurse at St. Gabriel’s Hospital.

She was young, blonde, quiet, and good at the work most people found too hard.

Sick children trusted her.

Exhausted parents trusted her.

Doctors trusted her because she noticed things other people missed.

That was why the old doctor requested her personally.

Arthur had been sick for months.

Fever.

Night sweats.

Weakness.

Rashes that came and went.

Small wounds no one could explain.

His family had flown in specialists.

They paid for private scans, private labs, private nurses, private everything.

Still, Arthur got worse.

The old doctor, who had cared for the family for years, believed the answer was not in the blood tests.

It was in the house.

So Fiona was hired under one rule.

Watch everything.

But in that mansion, watching was dangerous.

👉 And on Fiona’s first night, Arthur’s uncle made it clear she was not welcome to ask questions…
