Chapter 8

PART 8:
The uncle was convicted of attempted murder, child endangerment, conspiracy, poisoning, evidence tampering, and abuse of a vulnerable minor.
Several staff members connected to the cover-up were arrested too.
The family’s money could not save him.
His name could not save him.
His fear could not save him.
The boy he tried to destroy survived long enough to become the witness he never expected.
After the trial, Arthur did not return to the old bedroom.
The mansion was cleaned, searched, and stripped of anything connected to the uncle.
But Arthur could not sleep there.
So the old doctor arranged a quiet medical recovery home outside the city, with sunlight, clean air, and a small garden.
Fiona was no longer assigned to him officially.
The case was over.
Her contract ended.
But on her last day, Arthur refused to let go of her hand.
“Are you leaving because they said bad things about you?” he asked.
Fiona knelt in front of him.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because you’re safe now.”
Arthur looked down.
“I don’t feel safe when you go.”
Fiona’s eyes filled.
The old doctor stood in the doorway, pretending to read a chart.
A week later, the court approved a protected care team for Arthur until the custody case was settled.
Fiona became his lead pediatric caregiver.
Not because the family demanded it.
Because Arthur did.
Months passed.
Color came back into his face.
His laugh returned slowly, then all at once.
He started sleeping with no pillow at first.
Then with one he picked himself from a store, bright yellow, shaped like a cartoon star.
The first night he used it, he made Fiona cut the tag off in front of him.
Then he asked, “Can you check inside?”
So she did.
She opened the seam just enough to show him there was only soft filling.
Nothing hidden.
Nothing moving.
Nothing waiting to hurt him.
Arthur touched the pillow with one finger.
Then hugged it.

Fiona turned away before he could see her cry.
👉 But one year later, Arthur still had one room left to face…
