Chapter 9
PART 9:
One year later, the mansion bedroom was no longer blue and cold.
The heavy curtains were gone.
The chandelier was replaced.
The walls were painted warm cream.
The bed was smaller, simpler, closer to the window where morning light could reach.
Arthur stood in the doorway holding his yellow star pillow.
Fiona stood beside him.
The old doctor waited behind them.
Arthur looked at the room for a long time.
“Do I have to sleep here?” he asked.
Fiona shook her head.
“No. You get to decide.”
That answer seemed to surprise him.
Children raised around powerful adults often forgot they were allowed to choose anything.
Arthur stepped inside.
Then he looked at the spot on the bed where the white pillow had once split open.
His hand tightened around the star pillow.
“He thought nobody would believe a nurse,” Arthur whispered.
Fiona swallowed.
“He was wrong.”
Arthur looked up at her.
“You believed me before I knew what was happening.”
Fiona brushed a strand of hair from his forehead.
“That’s what nurses are supposed to do.”
The old doctor corrected softly from the doorway.
“No,” he said. “That is what brave people do.”
Fiona looked down, embarrassed.
Arthur smiled for the first time in that room.
Outside, rain began tapping gently against the glass.
Not violent now.
Not frightening.
Just rain.
Arthur walked to the bed and placed the yellow pillow on top of the clean sheet.
Then he turned back to Fiona.
“Can we leave the door open tonight?”
Fiona nodded.
“As wide as you want.”
That night, Arthur slept with the door open, the hallway light on, and no secrets inside his pillow.
The family that once accused Fiona of destroying the room finally understood the truth.
She had destroyed the lie.
