Chapter 1

PART 1:

Emily sat on the emergency room bed with a hospital blanket pulled tight around her shoulders.

Her face was bruised.

Her wrist was swollen.

Her lips were pale from pain.

The hallway outside her room was white, cold, and too bright, the kind of bright that made every tear feel public.

Margaret Prescott stood in front of her wearing a white designer suit and pearl earrings, looking less like a worried mother-in-law and more like a woman who had come to clean up an inconvenience.

“Stop acting like a victim,” Margaret said. “You fell.”

Emily’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

Behind Margaret, Ethan stood with both hands in his coat pockets.

Her husband.

The man who had promised to protect her.

Now he looked at her like she was a problem his family needed to erase.

Emily tried to sit straighter, but pain shot through her ribs.

She swallowed hard.

“You locked me in that house.”

A man laughed from the side of the hallway.

Brandon Prescott, Ethan’s older brother, leaned against the wall with a smug smile.

“Careful,” Brandon said. “Nobody believes girls who marry above themselves.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

But she did not look away.

Not this time.

Slowly, she pulled up the sleeve of her hospital gown.

Purple finger-shaped bruises wrapped around her wrist.

A nurse at the end of the hallway stopped moving.

Margaret’s face tightened.

Emily looked down at the hospital bracelet on her arm, then pointed at the medical file beside the bed.

“The doctors already saw the marks.”

For the first time, Ethan’s expression changed.

His eyes snapped toward the file.

Margaret went still.

Brandon’s smile faded.

Then the double doors at the end of the hallway opened hard.

Boots struck the hospital floor.

A woman in a decorated military uniform walked straight toward them, silver hair pinned neatly back, medals bright against her chest.

Colonel Victoria Hart.

The entire hallway seemed to shift around her.

She walked past Margaret without blinking.

Past Brandon.

Past Ethan.

And went straight to Emily.

The colonel bent down and pulled Emily into her arms.

Emily broke instantly.

“Mom,” she whispered.

Margaret’s face drained of color.

Colonel Hart held her daughter carefully, like she was afraid one wrong touch might hurt her more.

Then she turned toward the Prescott family.

Her voice was calm.

That made it terrifying.

“You picked the wrong daughter to silence.”

Nobody moved.

May you like

Not even Ethan.

👉 But three years earlier, Emily had no idea the charming man she loved came from a family that knew how to bury the truth.
