Chapter 7

PART 7:
The police arrived five minutes later.
Margaret tried to speak first.
That was her habit.
Control the room.
Control the story.
Control the consequences.
But this room no longer belonged to her.
The officer spoke to the doctor.
Then to Emily.
Then to Victoria.
When he turned to Ethan, his voice was formal.
“Mr. Prescott, we need you to come with us.”
Ethan looked at his mother.
For the first time in his life, she could not save him fast enough.
“Mother,” he said.
Margaret grabbed the officer’s arm.
“This is outrageous. Do you know who we are?”
The officer looked down at her hand until she removed it.
“Yes, ma’am,” he said. “That’s why we’re doing this by the book.”
Ethan was escorted down the hallway.
No cameras.
No dramatic shouting.
Just the quiet collapse of a man who had believed his last name was stronger than the law.
Brandon tried to leave next.
Victoria stopped him with one sentence.
“Your statement about nobody believing girls who marry above themselves is already on hospital camera.”
Brandon froze.
The hallway camera blinked above him.
He slowly looked up.
For the first time, he noticed it.
Emily had noticed it earlier.
So had the nurse.
So had Victoria the moment she arrived.
Margaret’s mouth tightened into a thin line.
“You will regret humiliating this family.”
Emily looked at her mother-in-law from the hospital bed.
Her voice shook, but she spoke clearly.
“No, Margaret. I regret trying not to.”
That broke something in the hallway.
Not loudly.
Not visibly.
But everyone felt it.
The old Emily, the one who apologized for bleeding on expensive rugs, was gone.

In her place sat a woman bruised, terrified, and finally believed.
👉 Margaret walked into that hospital to bury Emily’s truth — but she left with her family’s power cracking behind her.
