Chapter 14 - THE DOORWAY

Margaret texted me the next morning.
I have Claire's flash drive. Come alone if you want it back.
Every rational part of me knew not to go.
I went.
That was my second mistake.
Samuel told me to forward the message and wait for police.
Claire told me not to let Margaret choose the location.
I told myself I would stand outside, record everything, and leave.
Margaret opened her front door before I knocked.
“You look tired.”
“Give me the drive.”
She smiled.
“You always did skip hello when you were angry.”
My phone was recording from my pocket.
I stayed on the porch.
“Did you take it from my house?”
“No.”
“Did Lauren bring it to you?”
“No.”
“Then how do you have it?”
Margaret leaned against the frame.
“Claire gave it to me.”
I laughed once.
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I expect you to remember your wife was medicated.”
There it was again.
The story.
I stepped closer.
Not inside.
Just closer.
“Give me the drive.”
Margaret suddenly raised her voice.
“Stop threatening me.”
I froze.
Then I saw the small camera above her door.
She had positioned herself perfectly beneath it.
I backed away.
“You invited me here.”
“Please leave.”
She started closing the door.
I made another stupid choice.
I put my palm against it.
Not hard.
Not violent.
Enough.
The camera would show my hand stopping the door.
Margaret screamed.
“Daniel!”
I stepped back immediately.
The door slammed.
I stood on the porch realizing exactly what I had done.
Within an hour, her lawyer filed the video with a request for a temporary protective order, describing me as an escalating threat.
My audio recording captured the full conversation.
That helped.
But it didn't erase the image.
Claire watched the video once.
Then looked at me.
“She told you to come alone.”
“I know.”
“She had a camera.”
“I know.”
“You knew she manipulates evidence.”
“I know.”
“Then why did you go?”
Because some part of me still believed I could force my mother to behave like a mother if I stood close enough and demanded the truth.
I couldn't say that.
The court denied an emergency no-contact order that afternoon but scheduled a hearing.
Margaret had not won.
But she had created another battlefield.
Then Samuel called.
The flash drive claim had been a lie.
Margaret's attorney told him no such drive existed in their possession.
She hadn't lured me out to negotiate evidence.
She had lured me out to manufacture evidence.
Claire heard that.
Her expression changed from anger to something colder.
“She isn't defending herself anymore.”
“What is she doing?”
“Trying to make you unusable.”
That night I slept in the guest room again.
At 2:10 AM, Ethan started crying.
I heard Claire walk past my door.
I almost followed.
Then stopped.
She had asked for space.

For once, I respected a boundary before it became a wound.
📖 Margaret's porch trap damaged my credibility, but the protective-order hearing forced her to make a sworn claim that directly contradicted the nursery recording. 👇
