Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY STORY

Lauren answered on the fourth ring.

“Daniel?”

“Did you tell Mom I was coming home early?”

Silence.

Then: “Why?”

I walked away from Claire's room.

“Answer me.”

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

Lauren spoke faster.

“She asked whether you were still working late because Claire had been having one of her episodes.”

“One of her episodes.”

“That isn't what I meant.”

“It is exactly what you meant.”

Lauren started crying.

She told me Margaret had been calling her for almost two months with updates about Claire.

Claire forgot bottles.

Claire slept during the day.

Claire cried unexpectedly.

Claire once left the stove on.

Some of those things were true.

New parents make mistakes.

But Margaret had arranged them into a story.

Then she had shown Lauren videos.

I went cold.

“What videos?”

Short clips of Claire stumbling in the hallway.

Claire asleep at the kitchen table.

Claire crying while Ethan screamed.

Claire dropping a bottle.

Lauren admitted Margaret had asked her to save copies “in case Daniel ever needed proof.”

Proof of what?

“That Claire wasn't safe alone with Ethan.”

The hospital corridor blurred around me.

My mother wasn't simply criticizing my wife.

She had been building a file.

I returned to Claire's room and told her everything.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she looked at Ethan sleeping in the bassinet beside her bed.

“She wanted you to leave me.”

“I don't know that.”

Claire looked up.

“You still do that.”

“What?”

“You still soften it when it's her.”

I had no defense.

The police later recovered the nursery recording directly from the camera provider's cloud system. The file on my phone had not glitched.

Someone with administrator access had manually deleted eleven minutes.

The provider's audit log showed the deletion occurred at 6:14 PM.

From my mother's phone.

That was the first major answer.

Margaret had restrained Claire.

Margaret had deleted part of the recording.

Margaret had Claire's phone.

The second phone contained reminders about Claire.

But none of that yet proved she had drugged her.

At 10:40 that night, the responding detective called.

Margaret had gone to the station with an attorney.

She claimed Claire had become irrational after taking medication voluntarily. Margaret said she grabbed Claire's wrists only because Claire tried to pick up Ethan while impaired.

Then the detective added something else.

Margaret had given them a video.

It showed Claire opening Margaret's handbag three days earlier and removing a small prescription bottle.

I felt my certainty fracture.

Claire saw my face.

“What?”

I told her.

For several seconds she said nothing.

Then she asked one question.

“Did the video show what I did with the bottle?”

I called the detective back.

It did.

Claire had photographed the label.

Then she put the bottle exactly where she found it.

The timestamp on the bottle showed Margaret's lorazepam prescription had been filled six days before Claire's first unexplained episode.

Claire turned toward the window.

“I wasn't stealing her pills.”

She swallowed.

“I was trying to prove she had them.”

For the first time that night, I understood the true shape of my failure.

Claire had already been investigating my mother.

Alone.

Because she no longer trusted me to believe her.

📖 Claire had finally proved why she touched the prescription bottle, but the reason she had begun documenting Margaret would expose a second motive involving our family's money. 👇
